The
project has been several years in the planning. Back in 1995 The
Spirit of Anniston started the ball rolling with the RBA
Engineering Group out of Atlanta. The City Council at that time
didn’t vote in favor of the project. It stayed on the back burner
and was revisited in 1997. The engineer assigned to the project
had moved to URS Engineering, but he stayed in touch. In 2000, the
project was considered again, but no action was taken. In 2002 the
Anniston City Council voted in favor of the project and
construction began in the summer 2003.
The City of Anniston
Public Works Department, The Anniston Water Works and Sewer Board,
URS Engineering Corporation, Bellsouth, Alagasco, The Spirit of
Anniston and the Cardwell Corporation all play an important role
in the project.

If you haven’t taken a drive
in Downtown Anniston in a while, you need to! The Noble Street
Infrastructure Project, which has been underway for several months
now, is really making a great improvement to our downtown area.
Although beautiful sidewalks, wider driving
lanes, wider parking spaces, better lighting and nicer landscaping
are the improvements most people will notice, these were not the
driving force behind the project. The drainage problems, the
leaking water lines, the crown in the middle of the road, the trip
hazards on the old sidewalks, and the driving lanes that were
narrower than the national recommended width, were what really
needed to be addressed. If all this needs to be fixed, why not
make it beautiful at the same time?

Maybe it’s time for you to
take that drive down Noble Street and see what you’ve been
missing!
