Persuasive Essay Topics of Today and Yesterday: The Aeroplane
Comes To Houston
Persuasive Essay Topics of Today and Yesterday is living
proof that there really is nothing new under the sun. Witness
the strange case of Houston, Texas, flight center of
tomorrow...and yesterday...
The World of the Now
As you may know, Houston, Texas has been on the flight map
big time, since the days of President Lyndon B. Johnson, of
Texas, when it was made the technical flight center for NASA.
The moment the space shuttle leaves (left) the ground, it
becomes the property of Houston who talks it along and monitors
its progress. Well and good. But did you know that Houston was a
flight center long before it was a flight center?

From an article entitled THE EVOLUTION OF THE FLYING
MACHINE INDUSTRY IN THE UNITED STATES - Aeroplane Factory
Planned for Houston
The first aeroplane factory in the South will soon be built
near Houston by two Houston engineers. One of these is a
graduate aeronautical engineer from the Royal Polytechniquc of
Berlin. He is a young German who visited France, Austria and
Russia to make practical studies of the best types of heavier
than air flying machines. The other is a young American engineer
who has been studying aeroplane design details and construction
for the past two years and a half. Previously to this he engaged
in general engineering for several years. These young men have a
good proposition it seems to us.
The aeroplane is coming into general use very rapidly, more
rapidly even than the auto mobiles. One year ago there was
scarcely a firm in the United States that made aeroplanes while
today there are more than thirty incorporated companies with a
capitalization of 3,025,000 making aeroplanes and
accessories in
the East, North and West. These figures are astonishing in view
of the short time that has elapsed since the aeroplane has been
in practical success.
Thirteen factories in the United States now make a specialty
of light weight engines for aeroplanes. Six factories make
nothing but aeroplane propellers. Three automobile tire
manufacturers now make aeroplane tires regularly in standard
sizes. More than twenty factories now make aeroplane fittings
cloth and accessories. Judging by the selling prices of
aeroplanes tho profits in their manufacture must be large.
Mr Swanson president of the Edison Phonograph Co of Houston
who is just back from New York stated "Before I left Houston I
had a vague idea that it would be many years be fore the
aeroplane would come into general use if it ever did but, in New
York I found everybody gone mad over aeroplanes the Vanderbilts,
Goulds, Astors and others of the prominent men there taking a
leading part. George F Harris a practical aviator of New York
who is spending the summer in Houston in an article in Tuesdays
Post reports substantially the same thing.
There is no other business today that is expanding more
rapidly than the manufacture of aeroplanes and especially is
there a good opening here in the South.
The proposition of establishing a factory in Houston is
worthy of all support since it will not only be one more
industry for our city but a very profitable one for its
stockholders and from our personal investigation we believe It
will bring rich returns to the investor being a perfectly safe
and legitimate investment in a business expanding by leaps and
bounds.

we're mostly pleased to bring you the great news about the
wonders of flying. Folks from 1910 have mostly gone underground,
but once they were flying high and rocketing around at tens of
miles per hour. Actually, walking wasn't crowded, and only the
most foolhardy would even think of lifting off the ground in one
of those goofy looking flying machines. My how times change!
Just 4 or 5 months before this article was written, the author,
if he looked up, saw Halley's Comet and Mark Twain went toes up.
