From Press Reports:
Hurricane Katrina news is sparse today. However, another facet of
Katrina is playing itself out at the gas pumps. The low price for
gas rose another dime here overnight.
The high price for gas is back up to $2.99 per gallon.
The question this raises is... how come? The benchmark price for
gas at the I-20 exit in Oxford, AL rose to that same price just
after Katrina hit the coast, then fell back down to $2.59 or so.
So, why $2.99? What makes this a magic number? Why not
$3.00 or $3.17, or $2.87? Why $2.99? Is this an arbitrary price or
is there sound mathematical market value pricing going on?
GetCalhoun.com would be more than happy to publish a bonafide
response to the intriguing $2.99 mystery from someone in the local
industry here.

Regarding the daily gas history below... The low price for
gas at the Oxford I-20 exit
just before Katrina was $2.43 per gallon. The high price was an
overnight jump to $2.99 just after Katrina. Use this for a
benchmark.
