From Press Reports:
Hurricane Katrina news was began at a time when there were many
questions in the air here in Calhoun County, AL. Now it looks like
one set of questions has been answered. Our role is not as great
as we thought.
A thousand volunteers, a very large company from
Louisiana, a few FEMA folks, and a herd of local officials came
together to prepare for throngs of refugees (evacuees) from down
south, who, for the most part, never came.
With somewhere between 1500 and 2000 emergency beds
prepared, to date less than 100 have been needed. Will this number
change? Who knows?
Since those dark first days there has been a lot of
progress down south. New Orleans got dry, then wet, and then dry
again. Tents and trailers have been placed elsewhere, and the
country as a whole absorbed the masses better than anyone ever
expected.
The best thing we can say here in Calhoun County is
that we were ready. Times being what they are, we may need to be
ready again some day. If so, then thank God for the dry run. If
not, it has been a time to remember when the best of human nature
played out here for all to see.
Until then, the Katrina saga continues, albeit just
below the radar. We'll be ready to report when and if necessary.
The GetCalhoun.com Katrina Archives remain onboard and active.

Like to learn more about Ft. McClellan? We found this nifty
site... Nobody is taking credit for the website. The contact
addressees don't know who wrote it, but it's neat...anyway.

Regarding the daily gas history below... The low price for
gas at the Oxford I-20 exit
just before Katrina was $2.43 per gallon. The high price was an
overnight jump to $2.99 just after Katrina. Use this for a
benchmark.
