Confessions Of A Real Web Pagemaker Regarding Webhosting
Norman Morrison with OceanView Graphics
Making websites, man and boy since 1996.

"I'm still wondering how they can afford to offer so much webhosting stuff for so low cost..." That's what one mystified webhosting user wondered in a post comment.

As for myself, I resisted using Gator for years because I didn't understand what they were all about. I ran across them a couple of times when I assumed webmaster responsibilities for sites that were already constructed.

I didn't understand the Gator interface, nor the concept. Frankly, up until recently, I have used only what you might call conventional web hosts with conventional control panel interfaces. In my career I have used a total of four different web hosts.

The first one, which was a major player, went belly up last year. They sold off all of their accounts to God only knows who. One of my sites was caught in the mess and it took some real footwork to untangle the mess.

The second company is a very good company, and I mean very good. The support is top notch, and the whole staff from top to bottom is friendly. They are really GOOD people.

The only problem, aside from their higher prices...which are worth it because of their reliability and personal service is that everything is hosted on Windows servers. Platforms that use the .php mode (like Wordpress) don't play well with Windows servers. You can get them to work, but everything is a workaround and you lose some functionality. At least that has been my experience. More, since I use FrontPage for a lot of my work, I'm worried about the FP server extensions evaporating some day. Yes, I know they serve from Windows, but they are like most everyone else...they barf and scoff at FrontPage. (Maybe you do too. More is the pity! Don't be putting down my FP!)

Since I do happen to have websites built with FrontPage, Wordpress, and Joomla, I was forced to look for an alternative.

My first pick was a new web host, which I will not name. They look good, but they stink on ice. My sites are SLOW! I have gone to them repeatedly about this issue. While their support crew is supportive, you quickly run them out of options. Then they turn you over to the next level and working through emails, you learn that everything is dandy galore on their end. So, whatever is making my webwork slow must be on my end...or in between. So long and do have a good day.

Speed tests have shown over and over that my other two good webhosts are working just like they are supposed to. (One of them being HostGator.)

So, to date, I have one webhost that I'm going to drop like a rock. Unfortunately, I have a fairly large Wordpress site that must be run over to HostGator, and I'm not looking forward to it. Had I had an ounce of brains when I hooked up with HostGator, I would have let them run the Wordpress site over for FREE. You can do that in the first month. Remember that. Moving conventional sites are a piece of cake. Moving Wordpress and CMS sites are a daunting task for someone who isn't fluent in server stuff.

And, I have a webhost that I'm going to keep out of loyalty. I have three or four sites hosted there.

And I have a webhost that will get all of my future business. That being, HostGator.

Now, the one big monster Gator difference between HostGator and the other two places is that with them, you have to pay for each and every standalone website. On HostGator, you get as many websites as you want, all hosted for one price. You get all the traffic you want. It's completely nuts. What it boils down to is that I get to host ALL of my 40+ websites on HostGator for a price that is lower than hosting ONE website on either of the other two webhosts.

If you have only ONE website, you are going to save by using HostGator and if you have 40 or 100 websites, just divide by whatever number you have to see how much you save. It's nuts. But it's good nuts.

But what good is throwing all of your website eggs into one basket if when the crunch comes, you're left holding the bag? We're talking support. All I can say is so far, so good. Support has been very supportive. I can't say that they are better or worse than my best web host, because, so far I haven't had a problem that would push them. I guess I should be grateful not to have this kind of data to talk about. So far, my service with HostGator has been fast and flawless.

As I said earlier, the reason I never seriously considered HostGator was because I didn't understand their control panel. In actual use, it contains a LOT more features than you will ever need. But above all, it contains a couple of features you will come to cherish. I have.

Here, let me show you the MOST important parts of the HostGator control panel...

  • Addon Domains gets you Create Addon Domains

  • Enter Domain Name and Password - Click Add Domain - DONE! Your set to upload your website.

The HostGator button indicated in the graphic above is the one you will use most frequently if you have more than one website, or plan to in the future. It brings up the second graphic. Here you will simply input the domain name and enter a password. The rest of the form fills itself out. One more click of the button, and you're ready to run up your new website. It is that simple!!! Crazy simple.

What you are looking at is where you click to add new domains. But first, let me explain that when you sign up, you give them your favorite domain and this becomes the name of your account. The rest of the domains go into the system under your main domain, but let me be clear here.... Your "addon" domains are completely separate in the eyes of the search engines and anything else.

For example: If your main domain is WebHosting.com, and your first addon domain is WebJelly.com, they are completely unconnected. Your second domain is NOT a subdomain...unless you want it to be, and there are control panel buttons for that too.

So, why might you want a subdomain? Well, you might have a website built with FrontPage, DreamWeaver, or MyFreeWebsiteBuilder, and you want to add a companion Wordpress blog and a Bulletin Board. These addons, you would most likely add on as subdomains. This saves you from having to purchase new domain names, which are not free, and gives your whole effort some helpful connectedness. Get it?

I'm telling you the truth here when I say in the past with other hosts, installing features such as Wordpress or a forum, were fraught with numerous dangers and peril  It was NOT not to be attempted by anyone who didn't have a good grasp of complicated server geek mess.

HostGator has gone even further to stupid-proof what used to be complicated installs.

HostGator has a ton of addon features like forums, CMS systems, Wordpress, Joomla and MUCH more that you can add on with a few clicks of the mouse. It's just that simple!!! (And COSTS NO extra!)

More, recall that I use FrontPage, which uses what they call "server extensions." Now, FrontPage will work without those extensions, but to get full functionality, you need to have them installed on the HostGator server. The extensions make the website authoring and running experience SO much easier. If you have never tried it, well...that's for a different article. The main thing here is that with two more clicks, those extensions are installed. Click, click, done! Nothing could be more simple, and it has worked flawlessly for me about 20 times, so far. Trust me, those extensions can be a booger with some webhosts. I have never had even one teensy little problem with HostGator.

No matter what web making program you use, HostGator makes your work easier to get seen!

Unless you are a one website wonder or some kind of web mogul, I recommend
the BABY PLAN. That's what I use and it works JUST FINE!

You can purchase your domain directly from HostGator, or simply move your existing domain over from whoever is holding it. Most of my domains, for example are hosted by Directnic. It's NO problem to point my domains at HostGator.

You won't save any money by hosting your domain with HostGator. I guess they calculate that the service they are already providing is worth it's weight in gold without having to give away domains. Their domain prices are comparable to Directnic and other major domain providers.

I offer you HostGator webhosting. There are about 150 billion other sites out there that also promote HostGator. The fact is that we ALL have the SAME prices. Period. You will find it no cheaper than right here. So, I hope you'll click on my HostGator banner link and go just go ahead and get the darn thing. I make a little commission, and you get the kind of hosting you need and have never had the pleasure of using before.

A note about saving money by becoming an affiliate. Heh heh. I tried that. It doesn't work. You can't save a nickel by selling it to yourself. However, when and if you do sign up as an affiliate of HostGator, you too can offer their service and become the 150 billionth and first one to do so.

A final thought. Whatever you do, for your own health sake, STAY AWAY from cheapie webhosting solutions. The piddly little money you save will cost you hair and sleep from the moment you sign up. You can put this advice in the bank. Stay away. DO NOT use these guys. You'll know them by their shyster ads and come on prices. Don't be fooled! Please!

Old HostGator Webhosting is a service I'm proud to offer. You'll wind up slapping your last webhost, if you can find them. Trust me on that!
