  • Panic at the pump
  • Ohatchee man arrested
  • Carjacking suspects arrested

Panic at the pump continues

It appears that the panic at the pump is continuing.  Motorists lined up at service stations Thursday evening and even into the early morning hours to purchase gas.  The rush came as prices began to drop locally Thursday with some stations selling regular for $3.97 a gallon.  The problem now is that many stations have run out of gas.  AAA Alabama spokesman Clay Ingram says there is plenty of gas available, the problem is a distribution problem. In Jacksonville Thursday evening police had to be called out to direct traffic because of the lines at the Murphy gas station which stretched down Highway 21, with some motorists waiting over an hour for their turn at the pump.  Ingram says many smaller cities in the area are totally out of fuel. Ingram says the problem is not limited to just Alabama. Officials say they are puzzled by Thursdays rush, saying there was no lack of gasoline and that prices are beginning to drop as prices stabilize in the wake of hurricane Ike.

Ohatchee man arrested for molestation

A 53 year old Ohatchee man has been charged with molesting two teenage boys.  Joseph Stephen West is charged with two counts of second degree sodomy. The arrest was the result of a joint investigation with the sheriff’s department, Daybreak Rape Crisis Center and the Calhoun/Cleburne Children’s Center. West has been released on two 60-thousand dollar bonds.

Carjacking arrests

Two Ensley men suspected in at least two Birmingham carjackings and a Rainbow City robbery earlier this week were arrested after a high speed chase in St. Clair County. 21 year old Antwon Anderson, 17 year old and Kiriakis Coleman, were taken into custody Wednesday after they crashed on Interstate 59 near Springville during the police pursuit. They were treated for minor injuries at St. Vincent's East and then taken to jail. They face state charges, as well as possible federal carjacking charges. The men are charged with robbing a Birmingham area man, at gunpoint about 4 a.m. Monday outside of his Apartment. They took his keys and drove off in his four-door silver 2002 Volvo S60. On Wednesday, the Volvo was involved in a robbery in Rainbow City. That's when police gave chase and eventually caught them about 1:15 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. Authorities  said both men confessed to the crimes. Police also recovered guns from the stolen Volvo.
