Panic at the
Panic at the pump
It appears that the panic at the pump
is continuing. Motorists lined up at service stations Thursday
evening and even into the early morning hours to purchase gas. The
rush came as prices began to drop locally Thursday with some
stations selling regular for $3.97 a gallon. The problem now is
that many stations have run out of gas. AAA Alabama spokesman Clay
Ingram says there is plenty of gas available, the problem is a
distribution problem. In Jacksonville Thursday evening
police had to be called out to direct traffic because of the lines
at the Murphy gas station which stretched down Highway 21, with some
motorists waiting over an hour for their turn at the pump. Ingram
says many smaller cities in the area are totally out of fuel. Ingram
says the problem is not limited to just Alabama. Officials say they
are puzzled by Thursdays rush, saying there was no lack of gasoline
and that prices are beginning to drop as prices stabilize in the
wake of hurricane Ike.
