Alexandria murder arrested
Calhoun County Investigators have
arrested a 22 year old Ohatchee man, charging him with the weekend
murder of 77 year old Jerry Shurbutt at his Alexandria
home. According to Chief Deputy Matthew Wade, Sklyer Allen was
arrested at a Jacksonville Mobile home park on the Jacksonville
Wade said that a citizen who heard of the search of the victims car
led to it’s recovery. Wade said the suspect was acquainted with the
victim. Wade said that because the murder occurred during the
commission of a robbery, they will seek to have the murder charge
upgraded to capitol murder.
The Talladega County Drug and Violent
Crime Task Force, with the assistance of the Sheriff’s Department
and the Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control Board, executed search
warrants Tuesday at two locations arresting 11 people on felony drug
charges. Officials say that 51 year old Patrick McSwain, was one of
the two primary targets of the searches. He was arrested initially
on charges of trafficking in cocaine, possession of a controlled
substance, possession of marijuana in the second degree and
possession of drug paraphernalia. 51 year old Frederick Parker
Cole, was the other main target. He was initially charged with
possession of a controlled substance (crack), possession of
marijuana in the second degree and possession of drug paraphernalia.
The search warrants were executed at 19 Millhaven St.
in Sylacauga and 1450 Shady Lane, Childersburg. Cole and McSwain are
believed to have been living at the Childersburg address and
operating a crack house at the Sylacauga location. All of the
arrests, including Cole and McSwain, were made at the Sylacauga

A Talladega County jury
of eight women and six men heard opening arguments and the first
three state’s witnesses in the capital murder trial of 30 year old
Norrel Montrail Swain tuesday. Swain is accused of shooting his
parents and his 9-month-old niece in the head with a .40 caliber
handgun late Aug. 16 or early Aug. 17, 2002. If convicted, Swain
faces life in prison without possibility of parole. The family asked
the state to take the death penalty off the table, which District
Attorney Steve Giddens said he agreed to do. Testimony is resuming
today in Talladega.
