Drug bust near
The Calhoun, Cleburne County Drug and
Violent crime task force wrapped up a weeklong investigation Friday
with the arrest of 4 men near Piedmont. Agents from
the task force and the DEA had been investigating the trafficking of
marijuana resulting in the seizure of 685 pounds of marijuana.
Arrested were 38 year old Jose Raul Escamilla-Canales, 33 year old
Luis Bonifacio Aguilera, 43 year old Armando Martinez Montanez and
51 year old Lyle Kennard Burns. The marijuana was seized from a
Chevy truck and was near an address on the edges of Piedmont.
Bank warns of email
Bank officials are warning of a scam
that is using the names of local banks to try and gain access to
residents' personal financial information. "urgent" e-mail messages
advising of some sort of problem with a bank account. The messages
feature the name of any number of banks and may warn of a suspended
or locked account, expired information or "problem." The goal is
to get you to respond and hand over your personal information for
fraudulent purposes. Officials at Piedmont-based Farmers &
Merchants Bank, said bank personnel have been seeing and hearing
about messages using the bank's name for weeks. Typically the
messages pick up over the weekend, when the bank is closed, but this
week the bombardment started on Friday, she said. The messages
sometimes even include links to a Web site designed to look like
Farmers & Merchants, she said. Bank officials say the bank would
never ask for personal information such as pin and account numbers
through e-mail, text message or over the phone, she said. The bank
has notified the FBI and the FDIC. They have been told the messages
could be coming out of Nigeria, she said. AOD
Federal Credit Union, based in Bynum, also has seen fake messages
using its name in recent weeks.
Grand opening of
Ladiga-Silver Comet Trail connection
Officials from both
Georgia and Alabama will celebrate The grand opening of the
connection between the Silver Comet Trail and the Chief Ladiga trail
with a shrimp boil in a farmer's cornfield at the Georgia-Alabama
state line. The PATH Foundation will host the Sept. 27 party 61.5
miles into the recently completed trail that starts in Smyrna and
now links with the Chief Ladiga trail and continues to Anniston,
Once the trail opens, cyclists will be able to ride the trail for
95.5 miles from Smyrna to Anniston. PATH executive
director Ed McBrayer said that's 17 miles longer than the next
longest bike path in the country, which is in Idaho.
part of the connecting section was paved last month, but landscaping
and benches are still being added.
