Bank warns of email scam

Bank officials are warning of a scam that is using the names of local banks to try and gain access to residents' personal financial information. "urgent" e-mail messages advising of some sort of problem with a bank account. The messages feature the name of any number of banks and may warn of a suspended or locked account, expired information or "problem."   The goal is to get you to respond and hand over your personal information for fraudulent purposes.  Officials at Piedmont-based Farmers & Merchants Bank, said bank personnel have been seeing and hearing about messages using the bank's name for weeks. Typically the messages pick up over the weekend, when the bank is closed, but this week the bombardment started on Friday, she said. The messages sometimes even include links to a Web site designed to look like Farmers & Merchants, she said.  Bank officials say the bank would never ask for personal information such as pin and account numbers through e-mail, text message or over the phone, she said.  The bank has notified the FBI and the FDIC. They have been told the messages could be coming out of Nigeria, she said.   AOD Federal Credit Union, based in Bynum, also has seen fake messages using its name in recent weeks.
