Jacksonville men charged with attempted murder

Four Jacksonville teens have been charged with attempted murder allegedly shooting at another teenager's vehicle Thursday night. The trouble reportedly started when three male high school students followed a couple to the 200 block of Mountain Avenue and began harassing them. The woman called Jacksonville police, but the three fled before police arrived. The couple did not file a police report, but said they didn't want to see the three youths near the apartment block. The youths returned within 20 minutes, accompanied by 19 year old Blake Cyprus, of Jacksonville. The woman again called police, but before officers arrived the dispatcher heard two shots. The maroon 2007 Pontiac Torrent was hit once on the left rear fender, but neither occupant was injured. All four fled before police arrived, but Jacksonville and JSU police officers chased three of them down near the field house. Officers did not find Cyprus at the scene, but he later turned himself in. Police would not identify the three youths because of their age. Two were 17 years old and the other was 16, police said. Thompson said their identities may be released soon if they are charged as adults. The four were charged with attempted murder after consultation with the District Attorney's Office and the juvenile court, Thompson said. The .22 caliber semi-automatic handgun was recovered at the scene. Two of the four were in the Calhoun County Jail on Friday. It was not clear on Friday where the other two were. Bond for the two at the jail was set at $130,000, with a court appearance scheduled for Nov. 20.

Fatal weekend accidents in East/Central Alabama

Weekend accidents have claimed at least two lives in east central Alabama.  State troopers say a 28 year old Ashland man was killed Saturday night in a one vehicle crash on highway 9 between Ashland and Lineville.  Troopers say that James Allen was a passenger in the vehicle which flipped several times after the driver lost control at a high rate of speed.  The driver, whose name was not released was transported to an Atlanta hospital for treatment.  In a separate accident, A 37-year-old Odenville man was killed in a late Friday night one-vehicle accident. St. Clair County Coroner Dennis Russell said that Michael Carroll was reportedly traveling alone on County Road 12 when he lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle apparently flipped and Carroll was ejected. Carroll was pronounced dead about 12:10 a.m. Saturday.

Alabama Power warns of scam

Officials with Alabama Power company have issued an alert to their customers after some customers reported receiving calls claiming to be from the utility company seeking credit for alleged late bills.  Alabama power spokeswoman Keisa Sharpe says they have received several complaints from customers.  Sharpe said that in several of the cases the caller recommended a credit card payment to take care of the bill.  Sharpe said that customers who believe they have been the victim of fraudulent activity should contact their local police department.
