Etowah fire death

Etowah county officials are investigating the death of A Gallant woman who died after she was burned Sunday night.  59 year old Lenetta Mae Hartline, died Tuesday at University Hospital.  Etowah county sheriff Todd Entrekin says the death is being treated as an arson and he said he expects criminal charges to be filed.   Entrekin said his office,  along with the Alabama Fire Marshal’s Office, the Alabama Liquid Propane Gas Board and the Etowah County Drug Enforcement Unit, are involved in the investigation.  Two fires — 20 minutes and about 5 miles apart — were reported Sunday night.  A fire was reported at a house on Red Hill Church Road, just off Gallant Road about 10:58 p.m.. About 11:20 p.m., the Gallant Fire Department responded to another call of an explosion of a gas grill at a residence on Old Gallant Road.  The grill was on fire in the driveway and a man and woman had been burned.  The man and woman were identified as brother and sister, John Hartline and Lenetta Hartline.   Lenetta Hartline was severely burned. Lifesaver helicopter landed in a nearby field and flew her to University Hospital Sunday night, where she was admitted in the hospital’s burn unit. She died about 5 a.m. tuesday.  61 year old John Hartline, was later transported to University Hospital’s burn unit and was released late Monday. Investigators say that the Hartlines own both pieces of properties where the fires occurred.

Gadsden man convicted in federal probe

Federal authorities say that A Gadsden man is among six people convicted this week in Chicago in a nationwide $60 million tax fraud conspiracy.  62 year old Robert W. Hopper, of Gadsden, one of the founders of The Aegis Company and the company’s managing director and principal in the company, was convicted by a federal jury.
Hopper and five others were accused of participating in a nearly decade-long scheme to market and sell sham domestic and foreign trusts through The Aegis Company to about 650 wealthy taxpayer clients throughout the United States.   Prosecutors say that Hopper and the others diverted income from businesses into sham trusts for clients, hiding hundreds of millions of dollars in income for those clients and resulting in a $60 million tax loss to the United States, making the case one of the largest of its kind.  The jury began deliberating May 14 following an 11-week trial. Hopper and the others were indicted in 2004, following a lengthy undercover investigation by IRS agents, code-named “Operation Trust Me,” and the seizure of about 1.5 million documents, computer files and related materials.  Nationwide, the Chicago-based investigation has resulted in convictions of more than 30 defendants, with charges still pending against about 30 other defendants around the country.
All six were found guilty of one count of tax fraud conspiracy — specifically, conspiracy to defraud the United States by impeding the Internal Revenue Service in the collection of tax revenue and conspiracy to aid and assist the preparation and filing of false tax returns on behalf of Aegis clients.

TVA to increase rates

The Tennessee Valley Authority plans to boost electric rates July First to offset rising costs of coal and the lingering effects of the drought.  Power rates for most consumers will go up about 2 percent under the automatic fuel-cost adjustment made every three months by the federal utility. TVA executive Ken Breeden says the typical household will pay one dollar to three dollars more a month for electricity this summer under the increased rate.  The boost comes three months after TVA raised both its base rates and its fuel-adjusted rates on April 1st by more than 12 percent. That was the biggest single increase by TVA in more than two decades.  The rate increase is expected to also be passed on to customers of electric co-operatives in north Alabama that purchase power from TVA.

Special Report from Alabama FM 100.7 in Ashland/Lineville...Local Fire

Audio: Wallace Boddy:

A fire early Thursday morning on Waits Rd. leaves one family picking up the pieces. The fire occurred approximately 1:30 in the morning at the home of retired business owner, Wallace Boddy. Boddy, who has lived in the Shinbone Valley area for 8 years since retiring from his business in Douglasville, Georgia, says that he thinks the fire might have started from faulty satellite television wiring. Boddy went onto say that he went to bed but then was awakened by his wife who had smelled smoke. Both Shinbone Valley and Coppermine Volunteer Fire Departments were dispatched to the scene of the fire and Shinbone Valley Fire Chief Sam Morrow said the house was fully engulfed once his fire department arrived on the scene. Morrow also stated that both fire departments used 3,500 gallons of water and spent 12 hours on the scene fighting hotspots within the home. Below: Coppermine/Shinbone Fire Department Volunteers
