Gunshots halt ballgame
Saturday nights spring jamboree football game
at Annistons Chick Lott Stadium was cut short by gunshots. Police
say that A juvenile from Hoover was taken into custody Saturday
night after allegedly firing several shots from a handgun outside
the stadium. The teams from Anniston and Sylacauga were just
minutes from ending the game when between three and five shots were
fired from outside the stadium near 19th Street and Davis Avenue.
Athletes on the field and spectators in the bleachers crouched and
took cover as the quick succession of shots rang out. off-duty
sheriff's deputies and police officers hired to work security at the
game apprehended the juvenile on the steps of the nearby Veterans of
Foreign Wars building within three or four minutes of the shots
being fired.School officials suspended the game and escorted the
Sylacauga students onto their bus and out of the area. This is not
the first time that gunfire has plagued annison sporting events.
Oxford suspended their traditional series with Anniston after
gunshots rang out at the last meeting between the two teams. As a
result, oxford decided to suspend any more games with is neighboring
Etowah county authorities arrested a suspect
wanted on numerous felony warrants issued through several agencies
Monday but not before he fled into the woods behind Etowah High
School. Searchers with the help of the dog tracking team from St.
Clair County prison, and the Etowah County Sheriff's Office
helicopter were able to apprehend the suspect. Officials say that
Two bail bondsmen attempted to take 36 year old Brian Gregory Payne
into custody on multiple felony warrants when the Payne fled into
the woods. The bondsmen were seeking Payne after he failed to appear
in court on drug charges.
Legislature fails to pass budget
Alabama lawmakers failed to pass an education
budget overnight, forcing a special session. The senate ended the
session minutes before midnight without a deal. Lawmakers were split
over adding 25-million dollars for public colleges and universities.
That is less than one-percent of the overall education fund. The
governor says he will not call a special session until an agreement
is reached. Several high profile bills died in the deadlock. Among
them, a state ban on smoking in most public places. Also removed was
a bill removing state sales tax on groceries. A bill that would keep
the state from taxing your federal economic stimulus checks was
killed in the Senate. The bill would have saved an individual
taxpayer up to 30-dollars and up to 90-bucks for couples with two
