Bank robber apprehended in Anniston

A Georgia man who had been staying with his girlfriend in Jacksonville was arrested today after robbing the Cheha Bank in Alexandria.  According to Calhoun County Sheriff Larry Amerson, the suspect was arrested by Anniston police after a lookout was placed for the vehicle.  The sheriff said that investigators from Anniston and Oxford were instrumental in gaining information leading to the arrest of 28 year old Kortez Antjuan Allen of McDonough, Georgia.  In a joint press conference Thursday afternoon, Sheriff Amerson said that Allen is the same suspect who robbed the Compass Bank in Oxford and the Regions Bank in Anniston.  The Sheriff said his office will be contacting the FBI to determine in federal charges may be brought.   Press Conference with Sheriff Larry Amerson:

Heflin agrees to buy industrial park

The Heflin City Council has agreed to buy out the countys share in  the industrial park jointly owned by the city and county.  The city council Tuesday night adopted a resolution to purchase the  park near the junction of Hwy. 46 and I-20.
The Cleburne County Commission had offered to either buy out the city’s part in the park or sell their investment in the site to the city.
Heflin Mayor Anna Berry said the purchase can be made in the name of the city industrial board and kept off the city’s books so that it doesn’t go against the city’s debt limit.

Juror and victims sent to jail

A juror and two victims spent five days in jail after they admitted talking by phone about a case while the jury was deliberating.Judge Clark Hall ordered the three to spend five days in jail on Friday after one of the victims told Assistant District Attorney Marcus Reid about the communication.Jurors heard evidence during Shannon Moore's trial on robbery and assault charges and were deliberating when one of the jurors, who knew the victims, apparently talked to the victims during the deliberation phase of the trial. The juror did not disclose that she knew the victims, but she was not specifically asked before the trial, Reid said.  The attorneys representing the state and Moore agreed for him to plead guilty to two counts of third-degree assault, which is a misdemeanor.  Judge Hall ordered the three to serve time in jail for contempt of court for not following rules, but communications like those in the case could be considered jury tampering, which is a felony.
