Alabama power cuts trees in Jacksonville
After over six months of legal wrangling,
contractors for Alabama Power Company this morning trimmed Barbara
Wilsons pecan trees in Jacksonville. According to Alabama Power
Spokeswoman Gina Warren, todays cutting was in compliance with last
weeks ruling by a Calhoun County Judge. Barbara Wilson was not at
home when the crews cut the trees today. Warren said that Alabama
powers attorneys continue to review the courts ruling and have not
made a decision on whether or not the ruling will be appealed.

Sales tax proposed
Last week state rep. Lea Fite disclosed that a
group from the Calhoun County Chamber of commerce had asked the
local legislative delegation to introduce a one percent sales tax
increase which would be used to fund the completion of the eastern
parkway thru McClellan. Fite said he would oppose the plan and no
legislation has been introduced. While the plan was never
officially made public, Anniston mayor Chip Howell indicated that it
would have affected other projects across Calhoun county.
The majority of the legislative delegation has said they would not
support a sales tax increase.

Cherokee county authorities have arrested a
centre man in connection with the string of arson fires on Gossett
Street in Centre. 56 year old Billy Joe Hicks, has been charged
with two counts of arson in the second degree in connection with two
fires that occurred at 226 Gossett Street. One fire occurred early
Saturday morning, March 22 and the other occurred Tuesday morning,
March 25. Both fires were investigated by Homeowner Gerald Cullen,
Centre Fire Department, Centre Police Department, Alabama State Fire
Marshals, Cherokee County District Attorney's Office and Dekalb
County's K-9 Unit. Officials say that Hicks may face additional
