2 killed in weekend accidents                    

A two vehicle accident overnight in Cherokee county killed two people and sent at another to the hospital.  According to the Gadsden trooper post,  57 year old James Bentley of Gadsden was killed when his 1995 cadillac Seville collided with a 1993 pontiac sunbird some two miles east of centre on u.s. 411.  The driver of the sunbird, 28 year old Robby Terry of Sevierville Tennessee was taken to UAB hospital while a passenger in his car, 33 year old Melissa Parker of Center was killed in the accident.  Troopers say the cause of the accident remains under investigation.



Local teachers finalists for teacher of the year 

Two teachers from Calhoun County have made the list of 16 finalists for the Alabama Teacher of the Year.  According to a press release from the State Education Department, Amber L. Trantham who teaches at Alexandria Elementary School and Deedee S. Adams a teacher at Oxford High School are among the 16 finalists for this years award. The list will be narrowed down to four teachers in April.


Lineville educator killed in hunting mishap 

School officials in Lineville are mourning the weekend death of Gerry Elliot, assistant principal of both Lineville High and Elementary schools.  Elliott died Saturday after a hunting accident. Elliot, was an agricultural science teacher with Clay County schools for about 12 years before he was promoted. The cause of the accident is still under investigation, according to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office. School officials said grief counselors are on hand today at the schools and the schools will dismiss early Tuesday to allow students and staff to attend the funeral. Services are set for 2 p.m. Tuesday at Mellow Valley Baptist Church. The family will receive friends beginning at 4 p.m. today at the church.
