Suspect arrested in Anniston shooting

A 26 year old Anniston man is in jail today charged with the Thursday morning shooting a 31-year-old man who was sitting in a car with his wife and children waiting for a school bus. The shooting occurred around 6:30 a.m. on Highland Avenue in Anniston. Police arrested Patrick Watkins late Thursday morning and charged him with first-degree assault. Investigators believe Watkins parked his vehicle near the 900 block of Highland avenue, approached the victim's vehicle, and fired several shots at him near 6:30 Thursday morning. The victim drove himself to Regional Medical Center, where he was admitted for treatment of several gunshot wounds to his arm. Police said the victim was able to identify the person who shot him. Police believe the shooting may be related to a dispute between the two men several earlier in the week. The victim's wife and children were not injured, according to police. Police said Thursday they had not yet recovered a weapon. Watkins remained in Anniston City Jail Thursday afternoon, with bail set at $25,000.

Sheriffs department to replace trucks

The Calhoun County Sheriffs department will soon be replacing their ford crew cab pickups with new chevy crew cab pickups.  Calhoun County Commissioners awarded bids for the replacement trucks Thursday morning.  While bids received on the ford trucks were over a thousand dollars a vehicle less than the chevys,  Chief deputy Matthew Wade said the decision not to use the ford trucks involved a major safety issue with the steering on the ford trucks.  The department had purchased the trucks as a money saving measure.  Wade said Thursday that the department has been able to sell the trucks, which have been in use for two years, recovering much more of the cost paid, resulting in an average cost of five thousand dollars per vehicle for the two years the department used them.

Fire claims 3 year old

A house fire near Ashville Thursday afternoon claimed the life of a young child sending his mother to a hospital for treatment.  St. Clair County deputy coroner Mike Pepple said the body of the child has been turned over to the coroner’s office and an autopsy would be done.  The names of the child and the mother were not released.
The fire occurred at a residence  on Shore Drive in Pinedale Shores, near Ashville.  Officials said someone helped the mother escape the residence that was engulfed in flames but the fire prevented the child from being rescued

Talladega murder conviction

A Talladega County jury of seven women and five men deliberated for less than two hours Thursday afternoon before finding 29 year old Wakilii Brown,  guilty of three counts of capital murder. The jury will return today to hear further evidence on aggravating and mitigating circumstances and will then make a non-binding recommendation to Circuit Judge Bo Hollingsworth on whether Brown should be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole or death by lethal injection.  Brown was convicted of beating his girlfriend and mother of his children, Charae Jemison, and her mother, Dotty, at the home they all shared in Sylacauga on March 9 or 10, 2001.
