13 indicted in federal drug probe                       

Federal, state and local law enforcement officials spent Friday morning rounding up drug suspects charged in a Calhoun County crack cocaine distribution ring.  A 25-count indictment unsealed Friday in Birmingham's federal court charges at least 13 people in the conspiracy to unlawfully possess with the intent to distribute more than 50 grams of crack from November 2005 to May 19.   Greg Borland, assistant special agent in charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration in Alabama, declined to comment on the arrests, other than to say, "It's a significant case." Prosecutors in a press statement described it as a "violent drug trafficking ring."   Some of the suspects made initial appearances and had arraignments before U.S. Magistrate T. Michael Putnam Friday afternoon. Detention hearings are scheduled for some of the suspects on Monday.  Those charged are:  Roosevelt Adamson Jr. ,Fannie L. Jenkins ,Tito F. Jones ,Maurice L. Kirby ,Jankowicz D. McElderry ,James Munford, Brenda Joyce Pittman, Maurice Shundrick Price ,Daryl L. Thompson, Chantley S. Williams, Penelope Alexis Monaka Williams ,Anthony Alvino Woods ,Earnest Lavell Wynn.   Prosecutors also intend to seek the forfeiture of some property in Anniston and a black Dodge Charger.  


Teen arrested at “Junteenth” Festival 

Hundreds turned out Saturday for Annistons 16th annual Junteenth celebration in Annistons Zinn Park.  An event celebrating the emancipation proclamation, organizers say the event is a chance for the community to celebrate its freedom and to bring the community together.  Only one incident reported at this years celebration.  A 15 year old was arrested after he fired shots into the air from a 22 caliber pistol. Off Duty sheriffs deputies, working security were able to apprehend the teen and recover the 22 caliber revolver.  The teen was arrested and charged with reckless endangerment, a class a misdemeanor.  Authorities said that there was already an outstanding juvenile pickup order for the teen from Calhoun County.  He was transported to the coosa valley detention center. 



EPA begins cleanup 

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency began removing lead contaminated soil Friday from an abandoned brass foundry and started trucking the waste to a St. Clair County landfill. Dawn Harris-Young with EPA’s Office of External Affairs Media Relations said lead contaminated soil from the abandoned Lincoln Metals Corporation/Heartland Faucet facility is being treated on-site, rendering the soil non-hazardous. She said the treated soil is then being trucked to the Cedar Hill Landfill in Ragland, a Subtitle D landfill.
