Jacksonville man killed in construction mishap     

A 55 year old Jacksonville construction worker was killed Monday afternoon while working on a construction site and Jacksonville High School.  According to Jacksonville Fire Chief Michael Daugherty, the man was killed when a compactor  he was operating overturned.  Calhoun County Corner Pat Brown said 55 year old Ricky Lavone Smith of Jacksonville, an employee of Anniston Concrete Company, was killed instantly.     Investigators from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration were at the site late Monday beginning their investigation into the death.  Work has been halted at the site until the OSHA investigation is completed.   



Election day 

Alabama voters head to the polls today and,  Alabama Secretary of State Beth Chapman is estimating that between 12 and 15 percent of the state’s two-point-seven million registered voters will actually cast a ballot today. In Calhoun and Cleburne counties, voters will choose today between two candidates for circuit judge both republicans.  Incumbent Judge Mannon Bankson was appointed to the 7th Judicial Circuit in January 2007 when Judge Jack Hughes retired.  Bankson’s opponent, Ray Bryan an Anniston attorney says he wants to make a difference in helping families in the court system. The winner of todays primary will begin their 6-year-term in January. Polls across East Alabama are open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. tomorrow. You are required to show a form of valid identification. Some examples are your driver's license, Social Security card, student I.D. card, recent utility bill, paycheck or gun permit.  The attorney general's office will have a toll-free hot line, 1-800-831-8814; you can call with questions about election law or complaints of election law violations. The hot line will be staffed from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Friday.

Piedmont police make theft and burglary arrests 

The continuing rise in property crimes, especially those involving materials taken to scrap yards has kept police investigators across the state busy.  Piedmont Police Chief Seven Tidwell says recent arrests have cleared several theft cases in the city.  23 year old Christopher Bagley of piedmont has been charged with the theft of a thousand dollars worth of vehicle parts from a piedmont business as well as the theft of a thousand dollars worth of steel palletts from another business.  39 year old Marvin Fortenberry of Piedmont has been charged with criminal trespass, theft of property and criminal mischief involving the theft and vandalism of another Piedmont business.   Officers have also obtained two warrants on Fortenberry involving the burglary and theft of $8,500 worth of materials from another piedmont business.  And 22 year old Daryl Dempsey of piedmont is facing burglary charges in the burglary of a piedmont residence.  Chief Tidwell said that his officers continue to investigate thefts and burglaries at Piedmont Housing Authority Property, asking that anyone with information on the cases or any other cases in the city to contact investigator Nathan Johnson at 447.9091.
