Commissioners resign from JPA

Saying that decisions at the Joint Powers Authority are being made without input from the entire JPA board, two Calhoun county commissioners, including the JPA chairman announced thursday they will be resigning from the board.  County Commissioner and JPA Chairman Pappy Dunn, who has been on the JPA since it’s inception, said the JPA has strayed away from it’s objective.  Commissioner Rudy Abbott who also sits on the JPA said he was concerned that all but a few board members are being kept out of the loop on the JPA, including the hiring of the new executive director and the hiring of a new attorney. The JPA hired retired Air Force major General Robin Scott Tuesday to become the new executive director. Commissioner Dunn said he was particularly upset that dispite he is a member of the personell committee, he was kept out of the loop on the selection of a new executive director.  In addition to commissioners Dunn and Abbott,  the commissioners said that County Administrator Ken Jointer will be resigning from his committee assignments on the JPA.    The JPA consists of three members from the Anniston city council, three county commissioners, an appointee from the council of mayors, a member of the legislative delegation and an appointee from the governor.

Cleburne republicans want Bryan for judge

Officials with the Cleburne County Republican Party have passed a resolution this week recommending the state republican party adhere to the wishes of voters in Cleburne and Calhoun counties and re-nominate Ray Bryan for the circuit judge vacancy opened by Bryan's recent decertification.  The Cleburne County Republican Executive Committee  passed the unanimous resolution Tuesday night in a meeting at the Cleburne County Courthouse.  The resolution states , the "technical violation" of the Fair Campaign Practices Act does not reflect upon Bryan's character.  Bryan won the popular vote in the June 3 Republican Party primary, defeating incumbent Mannon Bankson. The state Republican Party decertified Bryan's nomination because his Fair Campaign Practices Act financial contributions forms were received late by the Secretary of State's Office. The resolution states that "It is the unanimous opinion of the Executive Committee that the decision of voters in Cleburne County should be given paramount consideration in the State Republican Party's decision in whom to nominate to fill the vacancy created by the decertification of Ray Bryan …".  The resolution also outlined frustration the county party has by having not been included in the decertification process.  According to the resolution, the county party determined that there is "no legal impediment or restriction to nominate Bryan to fill the vacancy created by the party's decertification …"  Cleburne county republican party chairman Ryan Robertson said the county party wants to support the will of voters. Bryan won Cleburne County with about 60 percent of the vote during the primary.  The resolution is being sent to state party headquarters in Birmingham where the group hopes it will be taken into consideration as the decision on who will receive the nomination proceeds.  State party executive director John Ross said the group's input is always welcome, but the party's decision remains the same.  "This is not a matter of discretion but a matter of law," Ross said. "Ray Bryan has been prohibited from appearing on the ballot in November."

Talladega murder

A Talladega woman has been charged with murder in the Monday shooting death of her husband.  38 year old  Josetta Burns Jones, is being charged with murder in the death of her husband, 41 year old Reginald Jones, at their residence on Plant Road. Officers responded to a domestic disturbance at the home Monday night when they found the victim deceased at the residence when they arrived. Josetta Jones was taken into custody at the scene without incident. Officials said that Reginald Jones had been shot more than one time, and that a handgun was recovered at the scene. Josetta and Reginald Jones had only been married approximately a month.
