JPA to demolish WW II Barracks
Just like area cities are cleaning up
dilapidated structures, the Joint Powers Authority at McClellan is
facing the same issues. Five world war two era barracks at the
former fort Mcclellan are scheduled to be demolished. Scott
Bradshaw, the Joint Powers Authority's property manager at mcclellan
says they are just a few of the buildings marked for demolition.
The JPA has currently budgeted $75,000 to remove the buildings,
which were considered temporary when they were built during World
War II. The demolition project will be bid out. JPA will select
the lowest bid that complies with JPA rules. Many of the buildings
have historical significance, which Bradshaw said is an important
part of McClellan. The JPA currently has several buildings that are
for sale as cleanup continues on a large part of the former base.
Bradshaw said that they encourage people to visit the beauty of
mcclellan but to be cautious and stay out of restricted areas .
Ordinance cleanup operations are moving forward with heavy
concentration on the Iron Mtn. Road area which will connect with the
eastern bypass when it is completed.
An argument between two brothers that turned
violent has landed a Gadsden in jail charged with attempted murder
after he allegedly shot his brother. 51 year old Gerald Buff, of
Agricola Drive, was arrested in connection with the June 30 shooting
in an area between his home and his brother’s home, both on Agricola
Drive. 59 year old Garry G. Buff was hospitalized from his injuries
but has been released.
Attalla escapee recaptured
A Gadsden man is facing felony escape charges
after scaling a wall at the Attalla city jail Monday. 26 year old
George Michael Smith, escaped from the Attalla jail about 9:15 a.m.
Monday morning, he had been held in the jail on misdemeanor
charges. Smith allegedly scaled the wall when he and other inmates
were allowed outside within the walled area. Smith was recaptured
about 15 minutes later, four blocks from the Police Department, off
First Street. Smith was arrested Sunday night and jailed on
outstanding misdemeanor warrants for failure to appear and was being
held on a $694 bond for unpaid fines.
