Bryan loses request for injunction

Ray Bryan today lost his court challenge for an injunction to prevent the  state Republican Party from decertifying his nomination for family court judge. Jefferson County Circuit Judge Scott Vowell released his order this morning saying  that the court did not need to stop the party from sending a decertification letter because a trial and final judgment "should be rendered in ample time for the preparation of the general election ballot." The Judge will meet with the both parties Friday morning to schedule the earliest time to bring the case to trial. Bryan won the popular vote in the June 3 Republican Party primary for the Calhoun and Cleburne county presiding family court judge, defeating Mannon Bankson. Ten days after the election, Bankson challenged Bryan's nomination in a letter to the state party, claiming Bryan had missed the deadline for campaign report filing. The Republican Party's steering and candidates committee decided to decertify Bryan's nomination in a closed meeting June 20.   Bryan sued June 27.

Three killed in holiday accidents

Three people were killed in two separate accidents in Cleburne County over the weekend.  A one-vehicle accident took the life of a Woodland man Saturday afternoon, according to Alabama State Troopers.  45 year old Joaquin Rodriguez, was killed Saturday afternoon when his 1991 Ford Expedition crashed on County Road 8, eight miles south of Heflin. He died at the scene. Troopers say the cause of  the accident was remains under investigation. Sunday evening two people were killed and another injured in a two-vehicle wreck on Interstate 20 shutting down all west-bound lanes of the freeway for several hours forcing traffic to be diverted to U.S. 78. The wreck involving a car and SUV occurred near the 205 exit, east of Heflin. 25 year old Lakeshia Barlow of McDonough Georgia was driving the 1995 ford explorer, she was taken to Tanner Medical Center in Carrollton while a 3 year old passenger in her vehicle was killed in the accident.  47 year old Roy Jackson of Birmingham was driving a 2003 mercedes and was killed in the accident.  Troopers say the cause of the accident remains under investigation.

RMC facing accreditation denial

For the first time in 51 years, Regional Medical Center in Anniston is facing possible denial of accreditation by the Joint Commission.  Hospital officials will travel to Chicago later this week to plead their case before a review panel to appeal the Joint Commission's preliminary denial of accreditation of the hospital. The preliminary denial is the result of a series of "requirements for improvement," identified by the Joint Commission, an independent body that evaluates hospitals nationwide. The current status is the result of an unannounced survey members of the Joint Commission conducted at the hospital in August 2007. Areas needing improvement, according to the Joint Commission's report include: labeling and storage of medication, completion of medical records, maintenance of fire-safety equipment and building features, and planning and documentation regarding anesthesia. In the surveys, in addition to the requirements for improvement, RMC scored above the performance of most accredited organizations in heart-failure care.
