School re-opens after storm damage
Saks high school re-opened with regular classes
today after Tuesday mornings storm ripped off a large part of the
roof of the school. Principal Jody Whaley found the damage when he
arrived at the campus early Tuesday morning . School
officials said classes at Saks will resume normally today, however,
students will be kept out of rooms impacted by the storm damage.
Workers put a weather-resistant cover over six classrooms and the
library, and covered equipment inside those rooms with plastic to
prevent damage. School officials said they did not know what it
will cost to repair the roof and said the impacted area must dry
completely before school officials can work on it. To help county
residents with cleanup, the Calhoun county commission has agreed to
allow residents to dispose of storm related debris at the Calhoun
county landfill today free of charge, this is for individuals only
and not for contractors.
Lab results released in Stanford death
The Carroll County Georgia Coroner released
toxicology results tuesday on the body of 17 year old Benjamin
Preuitt Stanford. Stanfords body was found near villa Rica Georgia
in November. Coroner Sam Eady said that the body contained above
therapeutic levels of doxylamine, a chemical found in over the
county sleeping pills. The coroner said that there were no other
signs of any illegal drugs or alcohol in the boys system. The 17
year old grandson of state senator Jim Preuitt was found shot in the
head not far from where his abandoned car had been found days
earlier. The coroner has ruled the death a suicide. The coroner
said that ballistics tests determined that the bullet that killed
the teen was fired from the gun found near the body, however no
fingerprints were able to be extracted from the weapon.
PCB suits scheduled for September
Attorneys say that in excess of 3,000
plaintiffs who have not been involved in previous lawsuits against
companies responsible for Anniston's PCBs pollution may get their
chance this fall. Attorneys from several Birmingham Law firms filed
suit in Jefferson County Circuit Court in March 2005 against
Pharmacia Corporation, Pfizer Inc., and Ransom Industries LP, which
operates in Anniston as Union Foundry. Tim Davis, representing more
than 1,000 of the plaintiffs, said the cases had all been
consolidated for discovery but would stand trial separately. He said
the first five have been scheduled for September.
Talladega murder trial underway
A Talladega County jury of nine women and five
men heard opening statements and testimony from more than 20
witnesses Tuesday in the capital murder case of 39 year old Wakilii
Brown, formerly of Sylacauga. The trial is expected to last from
five to eight days, including the sentencing phase. Brown is charged
with the March 2001 beating deaths of Cherae Jemison, his girlfriend
and the mother of his two children, and Jemison’s mother, Dotty
Jemison. He allegedly stole checkbooks from both women, took Cherae
Jemison’s car and drove all three of her children to Cleveland,
Ohio, where he was arrested following a standoff with police there.
