Jacksonville downtown development

The business landscape near downtown Jacksonville could soon be changing.  The Cities planning commission has approved plans for the development of the block currently occupied by Gamecock pawn from Pelham road to church streets just north of the city square.  Goodwyn, Mills and Cawood is proposing to clear the property to construct a new Walgreens.  Officials say that the developers are awaiting approval from the Alabama Department of Transportation for an entrance on Pelham road.  No target date has been announced for completition of the project.

Lincoln officials eye growth in ‘08

Officials in Lincoln are hoping that 2008 will be a good year for growth, through condominiums and industrial development.  Mayor Lew Watson said Several condo projects in 2007 prompted city officials to change Lincoln's zoning restrictions to allow multiple single-family dwellings in one building. Within months, land clearing and construction began on the 40-unit Legacy at Talladega along Speedway Boulevard, the 200-unit Coosa Towers off Lock 4 Road overlooking the Coosa River, and the 170-unit Pier Point off U.S. 78.  Legacy will be a gated community situated near the Talladega Superspeedway, while Coosa Towers will feature walking and golf trails and swimming pools, and will resemble a beach condominium development. Pier Point is a six-year project near Logan Martin Lake.  Dennis McDowell, a developer based in Carrollton, Ga., is involved in the three projects. He said Lincoln is a natural fit for condo projects because of its proximity to waterfront property and because of market interest from retirees who might feel priced out of the Gulf Coast.

The Legacy project also is aimed at taking advantage of interest from NASCAR fans because of its location near the Talladega speedway.  The city also has high hopes for its industrial park near Interstate 20. Last January, the city bought 160 acres for $2.1 million with hopes of drawing tenants. The city spent about $100,000 clearing the property and installing water, sewer and gas lines. The idea was to sell the property off in 5- to 10-acre tracts.  Watson said there has been some interest since then, but no movement so far.

Suspect arrested in Anniston robbery

A 21-year-old Anniston man has been charged in connection with the Nov. 27 robbery of a 43-year-old Anniston woman in the driveway of her home.   Anthony Marquarius Fluker has been charged with first-degree robbery in that case and with third-degree burglary in two unrelated cases. He also is charged with giving a false identity to police. Police say that Fluker and some accomplices followed the woman home in a gold four-door Honda Accord after she made a purchase at the Chevron station at McArthur Drive and Noble Street. When she pulled into her driveway Fluker allegedly got out of the Accord and approached the driver's-side door and armed with a handgun and told her to give him money.  In addition to the burglary, robbery, and false-identity charges, he faces four drug-related charges: possession of a controlled substance, distribution of a controlled substance, drug paraphernalia, and possession of marijuana.

Widow fights to keep husbands killer behind bars

The widow of an Etowah County Sheriffs Department captain killed in the line of duty ten years ago is fighting to keep the woman that killed her husband behind bars.  Captain Chriss McCurley was killed during a drug rain on October 10th 1997 while three other officers were injured. Connie Tozzio plead guilty to murder and three counts of attempted murder and was sentenced to 40 years in prison.  She is up for parole on January 22nd.  Tozzi had told investigators that she and Ezra Peterson had practiced more than 100 times for a shootout like the one that killed Mcurley.  Peterson was convicted of murder and sentenced to death.  He hand himself while on death row.  Donna McCurley said she and others plan to appear before the parole board in Montgomery to oppose Tozzi’s early release.
