House passes state sales tax exemption on
Alabama House of Representative Tuesday approved a historic bill
that would remove the state sales tax from grocery sales in the
state. The House voted 63 to 38 to approve the proposed
constitutional amendment. Representative Randy Wood said he voted
against the bill because while it would remove the 4% state sales
tax on groceries, it would increase the tax burden for Alabamas
working class. If the measure receives final approval in the state
Senate, voters will decide the issue on the November 4th

City leaders in Heflin say they have no
interest in selling their share of the Cleburne county industrial
park. Mayor Anna Berry says the city would seek to buy out the
county's stake in the development. Cleburne County Commissioners
adopted a resolution stating that the commission's primary
preference was to buy out the city, but its secondary preference was
to sell to the city. The resolution requested a response from the
city by April 30. For the city of Heflin to purchase the property,

Council is expected to discuss the proposal at their April 22
Investigators with the fire marshals office are
investigating a fire early Tuesday morning that claimed the life of
a St. Clair County man. Officials say that 54-year-old Johnny Dale
Bowman of Mineral Springs was killed in the fire that consumed an RV
parked at 1708 Mineral Springs Road. Bowman, who was living in the
RV at the time of the fire, was pronounced dead at the scene shortly
before 3 Tuesday morning. Officials with the State Fire Marshal’s
office were at the scene working to determine the cause of the
fire. Investigators say they believe gasoline may have been
introduced into a kerosene heater inside the RV.
