One killed in Randolph accident

An early morning accident Saturday claimed the life of a Wedowee man.  According to state troopers at the Jacksonville polst,  29 year old Julio Bartolon Martinez of Wedowee was killed when his 1998 ford explorer crashed some ten miles north of Wedowee on Old Highway 431 in Randolph County.  Troopers said the accident occurred near 4:30 Saturday morning and remains under investigation.

JSU fires Associate Athletic Director

Jacksonville State has fired associate athletic director Roger Shultz, who has been on  leave from his job at the university to compete on the reality TV show "The Biggest Loser" .  Shultz had been on the job at JSU for only five months .   The university fired the former Alabama football player  last week  after he returned home to Enterprise, where he is still working out in an effort to win the weight-loss competition.  JSU athletic director Jim Fuller says Shultz was hired to enhance the university's marketing and fundraising effort, but after just a few months on the job he chose to go on sick leave to be a part of a TV reality show.
Fuller says it's time to move forward with the marketing and fundraising effort.
Shultz, who started out at 363 pounds, had lost 127 pounds through this week's episode on the NBC show. Shultz started taping the show in October and said he understands Jacksonville State's decision.

Hobson City meeting

A group of Hobson City residents will meet tonight to unveil a guide to keeping their  town running. The group hopes to establish resident-led committees to tackle community involvement, town cleanup, business recruitment and re-establishing and maintaining a police force.
