Man dies after standoff with police

A 32 year old Gadsden man  is dead following a standoff on Holmes Street in the Clubview area of Gadsden in what police have said was the result of a domestic argument.  32-year-old Erik Clayton died at the house, Wright said that  no shots were fired by the Gadsden Police Department’s SWAT team. The fire department also was called to the area because of a fire at a house across the street from the Holmes Street residence. Investigators say they believe Clayton had set the fire sometime during the night.  Clayton and his wife were separated and he was living in a Rainbow City apartment and had gone to the home on Holmes street Wednesday night to visit his children.  Police said the wife called someone near 5:30 Thursday morning and that person contacted police.   A negotiator from the police department talked by phone with Clayton, who let the children in the house go. The negotiator continued to talk with him, when he let his wife go just before 8 a.m. Clayton was found dead in the house a short time later.
