Man dies after standoff with police
A 32 year old Gadsden man is dead following a
standoff on Holmes Street in the Clubview area of Gadsden in what
police have said was the result of a domestic argument. 32-year-old
Erik Clayton died at the house, Wright said that no shots were
fired by the Gadsden Police Department’s SWAT team. The fire
department also was called to the area because of a fire at a house
across the street from the Holmes Street residence. Investigators
say they believe Clayton had set the fire sometime during the
night. Clayton and his wife were separated and he was living in a
Rainbow City apartment and had gone to the home on Holmes street
Wednesday night to visit his children. Police said the wife called
someone near 5:30 Thursday morning and that person contacted
police. A negotiator from the police department talked by phone
with Clayton, who let the children in the house go. The negotiator
continued to talk with him, when he let his wife go just before 8
a.m. Clayton was found dead in the house a short time later.
Anniston animal control hearing
While there was a light turnout Thursday
evening for the City of Annistons public hearing on proposed changes
to regulate and define vicious dogs in the city, the city council
seemed pleased with the public input they did receive. Mayor Chip
Howell said while turnout was light, he was pleased that almost all
areas of the city were represented. The mayor said the council
received some good comments and are ready to move forward . The
council is expected to continue discussions on refining a potential
ordinance possibly as early as next week.
Ohatchee woman killed in accident
Alabama state troopers report that An 82 year
old Ohatchee woman was killed Thursday morning in a one-vehicle
accident on Ingram Wells Road in Calhoun County. Troopers report
that Edna Richey, was killed when her 1995 Buick ran off the road
around 9:15 a.m. Thursday morning about one mile east of Ohatchee.
Calhoun County Coroner Pat Brown has indicated t hat the accident
may have been the result of heart problems.
Two injured in Etowah poultry plant
An ammonia
leak at an Etowah County food plant Thursday afternoon forced the
plant to be evacuated with one employee taken to a local hospital
for treatment and another treated and then transferred to a
Birmingham hospital. Officials said the incidend occurred at 1:47
p.m. at the Koch food plant on Paden road. According to a press
release from Etowah County EMA, a high pressure overhead pipe
reportedly ruptured leaving one employee with chemical burns. The
employee was later transferred to a Birmingham hospital. Another
employee was taken to Gadsden Regional Medical Center with
respiratory problems. Officials said an estimated 768.5 pounds of
ammonia leaked from a location in the plant, which was formerly
Tyson Foods.
The plant employs about 320 workers.
