Troopers with the Jacksonville State Trooper post say that Spencer Ray Thorton, was driving a 2005 GMC three miles east of Heflin around 1:30 p.m. when the accident occurred. A spokeswoman at the trooper post said the collision involved a commercial vehicle. The accident remains under investigation.

Wal-Mart evacuation

Shoppers at the Jacksonville Wal-Mart as well as customers of a local fast food restaurant were forced to evacuate the buildings Sunday evening after a suspicious odor brought fears of a possible natural gas leak.  Fire officials were notified of the suspicious smell near the store’s pharmacy about 4:40 p.m. and ordered the store evacuated. Shoppers abandoned their merchandise and calmly exited the building. After about two hours, workers determined the odor was not from a natural gas leak but was believed to coming from the underground sewer system. An estimated 150 people evacuated Wal-Mart while three customers evacuated the nearby Taco Bell. Both stores re-opened about 6:30 Sunday evening.

Rape suspects sought

Anniston police are searching for a man who kidnapped two women at gunpoint from the Victoria Inn parking lot early Friday morning, where he robbed them before releasing one of them, and then raping the other woman before also letting her go. The two women ages 28 and 43 years old were visiting from Florida. According to police, the two women were in the parking lot of the inn where they were staying when the man forced them to get into their sport utility vehicle. Gadsden police report that they are investigating two rapes that occurred Friday.  A woman in her 80s told police she was robbed and raped by a man who went in her house between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. Friday night.   The woman was able to sound her medical alarm, which caused the man to run from the Gardner Street residence.Another woman reported to police that she was raped at her home on Chandler Street in East Gadsden when a man broke in on her between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. Friday morning.  The woman told police that He was in the house for four to five hours.  Police say the suspect in both cases was described as a young black male.
