Changes being sought in Bingo Law

Are bingo operations in Calhoun County operating for charity or more for personal profit.  That is a question that members of the Calhoun County Bingo Regulatory Commission say they cannot answer with certainty.  In February bingo operators, led by Rick Taylor with Sweepstakes International which owns the Bingo Palace in Piedmont, called for the resignation of Commission Chairman Larry Sylvester saying he overstepped his authority when he obtained a subpoena from the district attorneys office to investigate the Piedmont operation.  Sylvester’s action came after complaints and concerns raised about the Piedmont operation.  Wednesday Sylvester offered his resignation but it was not accepted on a 3 to 2 vote of the board. Sylvester said that the commissions primary responsibility is to insure that the operators are following the law and paying 10% of their profits to charity. According to the Bingo Commissions records, the Piedmont operation reported 2.73 million dollars in gross proceeds last year, and after expenses, they reported paying only $250,000 to charity.    Calhoun counties legislative delegation is studying the issue after a meeting with Sylvester, the district attorney and the sheriff.  Sylvester said a major problem is the commission is charged with overseeing the operators but with no resources to do so.

 Suspects sought in Jacksonville robbery

Jacksonville Police are seeking a suspect  who robbed a man and a woman at gunpoint in a residential area of the city early Wednesday morning. Investigators said  the two 19-year-old victims were walking to a residence in the 1400 block of Mountain Street Northeast when they were approached by four men wearing masks.

Several of the  men had handguns and demanded money.

The robbers took the woman’s purse, wallet and cell phone and the man’s wallet then struck the male victim in the head with the grip of a gun, police said he was not seriously injured.

The robbers then fled in a car but dropped one of their guns, which was re-covered by Jacksonville police.

Police recovered the car used to escape Wednesday afternoon.

Jacksonville police urge anyone with information to call 435-6448.

Suspects indicted in childs death

The mother of a 5-year-old boy and her boyfriend were served capital murder warrants Wednesday after an Etowah County Grand Jury indicted them in connection with the five year olds murder.  31 year old Kevin André Towles,  was served the warrants at the Shelby County Detention Center, where he is being held by U.S. marshals on a federal weapons charge.  25 year old Shalinda Glass,  was served the warrants at the Etowah County Detention Center.  No bond was set for either suspect.  Glass and Towles are charged with the December beating death of Geontae Glass. The child became the focus of a search across much of the state on Dec. 4 after his mother reported her car was stolen with Geontae asleep in the back seat when she went inside an Albertville convenience store just after 6 a.m. with her 7-year-old daughter. Investigators say Geontae already was dead - and buckled in the car's back seat - and the theft of the car was staged as part of a plan to cover up his death.
