Oxford to swear in new council member
The Oxford City Council will fill a vacancy on
the council when they meet at 6:30 Tuesday night. Boice Turner will
be sworn in during the meeting replacing Johnny Bentley, who retired
from the council in January. Several city officials will be out of
town next week so the council moved their meeting to tonight. Mayor
Leon Smith, Council President Mike Henderson and Councilmen Greg
Thrower and Steven Waits will be traveling to the nation’s capitol for
a meeting hosted by the National League of Cities. Tuesday night’s
meeting gets underway at 6:30 at the Oxford City Hall
Authorities investigating bank robberies
Moody Police and the FBI are investigating the
Monday morning robbery of a Moody Bank. Officials say that the First
American Bank on Moody Parkway was robbed near 11:30 Monday morning.
Other details of the robbery have not been released.
Police in Childersburg are seeking the public’s
help in locating two men who robbed a Childersburg Bank Friday.
Investigator Shane Burnette said Superior bank, located along U.S.
280, was robbed at 3:12 p.m. Friday afternoon by two men armed with a
9-milimeter automatic handgun wearing masks. The first suspect was
described as a black male, more than 6 feet tall, weighing about 160
pounds and of medium build. The second suspect was described as being
between 5 feet 8 and 5 feet 9, of medium build and weighing about 165
pounds. According to police reports, both suspects busted open the
bank door, hollering and telling everyone to get down. The first
suspect then jumped over the counter and went to the cash drawers and
stationary vault, while the second suspect stayed by the door.
The tellers and individuals in the bank were told
to stay on the floor. The first suspect took the money and both left
through the front door.
Burnette said it only took about 2 minutes for
the suspects to enter, rob and exit the bank. They left with a little
more than $28,000. The two men fled the scene in what was later
discovered to be a stolen white, four door Oldsmobile. Burnette said
it is believed they had another vehicle ready to switch over to. They
abandoned the stolen Oldsmobile in the Childersburg Cemetery behind
the Church of God.
The car is in police custody, and Burnette said
it may have had a Calhoun county tag on it prior to the bank robbery.
He and the department hopes the public has information that could help
lead to the arrests and conviction of the two robbers.
If anyone has any information regarding the case,
they are asked to call Burnette with the Childersburg Police
Department at 256-378-5568. Callers can remain anonymous. The case is
under investigation by the Childersburg Police Department and FBI.
Alabama schools receive bad grades in study
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce crunched a bunch of numbers and came to
this downer of a conclusion:
schools are not teaching children what they need to know to compete in
a global economy. And what the rest of the country does badly, Alabama
does worse. The study graded states and picked out "leaders and
laggards." It found most fourth- and eighth-graders across the United
States are not up to snuff in reading or math. The group said it had a
duty to point this out, to demand reform. The future of the country
depends on it. From looking at the scores, most of the country needs a
good grounding. And Alabama? Well, if the state had hands I wouldn't
quibble if a substitute teacher Scotch-taped them to a desk. Alabama's
report card is miserable:
Academic achievement: F. Only New Mexico,
Mississippi and D.C. scored worse.
Academic achievement of low-income and minority
students: F. Thank God for Mississippi,' cause they're the
only state behind.
Return on investment: F.
Postsecondary and workforce readiness: F.
