Southside woman sentenced in childs death

28 year old Ansuya Patel of Rainbow City, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter in the 2002 death of a 5 year old girl she and her husband were adopting. Etowah County Circuit Judge Shaun Malone handed down the maximum sentence allowed, according to Etowah County District Attorney Jimmie Harp.  Judge Malone denied a request for probation from Patel after the sentence was given and required Patel to serve a mandatory five years before a parole hearing could be held.  Patel originally was charged with capital murder after the death , of Priya, who was being adopted by Ansuya and her husband, Denesh, from a cousin in India.  Harp said that on May 8, 2002, Rainbow City Fire Department medics responded, and the child was driven to a hospital and then flown to Children's Hospital in Birmingham, where she died the next day.
The child had swelling of the brain and an injury to the head. An autopsy showed the child died from "sudden impact syndrome," Harp said.  Harp said Patel will face immediate deportation to India after the sentence is served.

Trial set for six year old murder

The trial for a Cleveland man accused of beating  a Sylacauga mother and daughter to death some six years ago,  could come up as soon as March or April.   Talladega County District Attorney Steve Giddens said that DNA testing his office has been waiting for from the state forensics lab is complete.  It will be six years in March since 48 year old Dolly Jemison, and her daughter, 26 year old Cherae Jemison,  were killed. A Talladega County grand jury indicted 25 year old Wakilli Brown,  of Cleveland, Ohio, in June 2001 in the beating deaths of the two women. Brown was indicted on three counts of capital murder. All three counts carry the death penalty.

Brown has been in the Talladega County Jail since mid-March 2001. He was in jail at that time on a theft-of-property charge stemming from his allegedly driving a 1990 Mazda owned by Cherae Jemison to Cleveland.

Calhoun County to celebrate Lee Birthday

The birthday of Confederate General Robert E. Lee will be celebrated with ceremonies this weekend.  Calhoun County Commissioner Eli Henderson says the celebration will take place this Sunday at Janney Furnace Park in Ohatchee.  The ceremony will also honor the over 900 Calhoun county soldiers killed in the war between the states.   The celebration will take place this Sunday afternoon at 2pm at Janney furnace.
