Oxford Councilman stepping down
After serving 22 years on the Oxford City
Council, Place one councilman Johnny Bentley will be leaving the
council on March second. Bentley, who was not present at Tuesday
night’s council meeting, submitted a letter of resignation to the
mayor and council. Mayor Leon Smith said that Bentley will be
missed. City Council President Mike Henderson said that an
announcement will probably be made at the council’s next meeting
regarding the search for a replacement to fill the remaining two years
on Bentleys term. Bentley, who owns Oxford Cleaners says he plans to
open a second business, a high end furniture store in Oxford.
Riverside body identified
Police have identified a man whose body was found
in Riverside two weeks ago as a missing Georgia man and investigators
believe that store security videos may help them solve his murder. St.
Clair County Sheriff Terry Surles identified the man, who was
discovered by two fishermen Jan. 3 in a wooded area near Interstate 20
in Riverside, as 61 year old Barry Alan Helling, of Snellville, Ga An
autopsy ruled the man died from a single, small-caliber gunshot wound
to the head. The sheriff said that Helling was last seen alive at
about 8:15 a.m. Dec. 9 at his residence. Surles said evidence
suggests Helling met with one or more individual in the metro Atlanta
area on the date of his disappearance after being invited or lured to
that location, although investigators could not say for what reason.
Transactions were posted on Helling’s credit cards in the Birmingham
and Atlanta areas and in Port Richey, Fla., following his
disappearance. Investigators obtained video footage of at least two
different men using Helling’s credit cards at an assortment of retail
locations in Atlanta and Port Richey. The men in the video footage are
all described as white men in their 50s or 60s. A middle-aged white
woman was seen with one of the men in footage at one Atlanta store.
Investigators have requested the credit cards remain open in an
attempt to track their usage. In one instance, a transaction was
rejected, upon which Surles said the man attempting to use the card
pushed his shopping cart out of the way, left the store and drove his
vehicle out of the parking lot in reverse to avoid being identified by
his license plate.
Tyson announces layoffs
Officials with Tyson foods say that they have
eliminated 90 jobs at the companies Gadsden plant cutting the
workforce at the plant back to 655 employees. Gary Mickelson, a
spokesman for Tyson said the layoffs were the result of the company
deciding to discontinue use of two assembly lines and to shift the
work to another plant. Mickelson said that the affected workers have
been placed on a call back list. The layoffs come on the heals of the
company announcing several weeks ago that they would abandon their
facility in Heflin, deciding not to rebuild the plant which was gutted
