Elected officials begin first day in office

While officials elected during the November general elections began their first day in office today,  Calhoun County Sheriff Larry Amerson Began his fourth four year term as sheriff.  Both the sheriff and his one hundred plus employees were sworn in Monday morning by Calhoun County Judge Malcolm Street.

Calhoun deputies make large drug find

A 23 year old Texas man has been charged with drug tracking after Calhoun County sheriff’s deputies stopped the pickup he was driving  on Interstate 20 and discovering at least 40 pounds of what they believe to be marijuana stored in trash bags. 23 year old Juan Luis Garcia Alvarez, of Dallas, Texas fled when deputies looked in the trash bags, but quickly apprehended hiding on the roof of an RV in a nearby parking lot. Investigators say that the amount of drugs seized Saturday is more than 18 times the legal requirement to be considered for trafficking charges, and deputies estimated the street value of the bricks of suspected marijuana to be around $128,000.  Chief Deputy Matthew Wade says the seizure was one of the largest the department has had.

MLK & Robert E. Lee birthdays celebrated

In the history of the South, few, if any, names loom larger than Robert E. Lee and Martin Luther King Jr. Today, both men have their day. Since 1986, the third Monday in January has been designated a federal holiday in honor of King, to fall near his birthday, Jan. 15. The state of Alabama, along with Arkansas and Mississippi, also celebrates Lee, whose birthday is Jan. 19, on the same day.  King, the civil rights activist assassinated in 1968, and Lee, a general of the Confederate Army, will both be celebrated. About 50 people attended an annual program dedicated to the life and works of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at Galilee Baptist Church in Etowah County Sunday afternoon.  The event was hosted by the Gadsden-Etowah chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.  In Calhoun County County commissioner Eli Henderson says that a celebration honoring Robert E. Lee will be held this weekend at Janney Furnace in Ohatchee.

Lincoln residents waiting on promised road

Some Lincoln residents are still waiting for a road promised by authorities after a hazardous train collision nearly a year ago raised the need for an alternate escape route.  More than 20 residents of Lomar Villa subdivision met Saturday, again pointing to the need for building an escape route.   State transportation officials presented a plan to Norfolk Southern officials last month that requests 50 feet of right of way along the railroad for an access road to connect Lomar Drive
eventually to Honda Drive, paralleling the railroad tracks.  But railroad officials haven't approved the plan.   Some residents were forced to shelter in their homes January 18th of last year when two Norfolk Southern trains collided as one
was attempting to pass the other along the sideline by the subdivision. One of the trains had a cargo of noxious sodium cyanide.
