Oxford & Piedmont mourn officers death

Flags remain at half staff in the city of Oxford as the city mourns the tragic death Friday of veteran police Lt. Dexter Holcomb.   Holcomb was killed Friday afternoon when he was struck by a school bus after the driver suffered what officials believe may have been a stroke.  Holcomb is the first officer in oxford to be killed in the line of duty since 1977.  Oxford residents have begun a memorial at the accident site in memory of lt. Holcombe.  In his hometown of Piedmont, where he served as a volunteer firefighter, flags will be flown at half staff.  Funeral Services for St. Holcomb will be Wednesday at 2pm at the Thompson Funeral Home in Piedmont.  The driver of the school bus that struck Holcomb remains in a Birmingham hospital.  Officials say that 55 year old Mary Mizzell remains in the Neurological intensive care unit at University Hospital.

Oxford woman forges marriage certificate

A 47 year old Oxford woman was attempting to see her boyfriend in the Calhoun County Jail and has instead landed there herself.  Authorities said that Teresa June Coppock presented a forged marriage certificate in an attempt to visit inmate Charles Brown.  Jail personnel obtained recorded phone calls between Brown and Coppock in which they discussed the forged certificate as well as a variety of criminal activities.  Coppock has been charged with possession of a forged instrument.

Wild Game Cook-off

Five husky judges sat around a small table on a Saturday evening. They were sampling meals prepared by contestants who in many cases had caught the wild animals and fish themselves.
The gourmet selections included stuffed quail wrapped in bacon and served with cheese grits, seafood potpie, bream egg roll and deer soup. The event was the annual Alabama Wildlife Federation Wild Game Cook-Off at the Talladega Superspeedway.
The judges critiqued the dishes based on originality and taste in three categories: fish, fowl and game.
Shelley England and Allen Nicholls teamed up to produce the impromptu winning recipe. It was made with filleted bream, turnip greens, bacon, bell peppers and onions. It was all rolled into an egg roll and deep fried.
