Officials to track convicted drug users

Authorities in Calhoun County will now be able to keep close tabs on convicted drug users.  A federal grant, distributed by the Alabama Sheriff’s Association, is funding the program to put global positioning beacons on methamphetamine users.

The system will allow law enforcement officials to use a computer to monitor the exact whereabouts of each offender, which will be strapped to the ankles of the offenders as part of probation. It can also be set to notify law enforcement officials via email or cell phone when an offender crosses into an area restricted by his or her probation. Michael Robert Tiller was the first to receive the beacon after he, pleaded guilty to possession of methamphetamine, he is among the first Alabama probationers to be monitored around the clock by a computer. Anyone wearing one of the beacons could have his or her probation revoked if the boundaries are breached. The system keeps a record of where the beacon has been, which could be used as evidence in court. The beacon also notifies law enforcement officials if the anklet strap is cut or if the device is tampered with. The grant, which permits the beacons to be used only on offenders who use, deal or produce methamphetamines, will help the county obtain about 30 of the devices, but officials are working on a fee system in which probationers would pay part of the cost of the beacons.

Councilman wants trees on Quintard gone

Some of the century old trees in the median of Quintard Avenue in Anniston could be cut down if an Anniston City Councilman has his way.  City Councilman Ben Little told city leaders this week that some of the trees are dangerous in that they obstruct the drivers view and that he wants those trees cut down.  Little instructed City Manager George Monk to follow up on his request.  Little told the mayor and council that a life is far more important than any tree.

Etowah couple recuperating from weekend accident

An Etowah County  couple injured in a Sunday car crash that killed another couple remain in University Hospital in Birmingham.  Mike and Gail Huie of Southside were passengers in a car involved in a single-vehicle accident Sunday afternoon at the 110 Alabama Adventure Parkway Exit of Interstate 59 in Bessemer.  The other couple in the car, Ronald Kitchens,  and his wife, Charmain "Cheri" Kitchens,  both of Southside, died at the scene.  A spokesman for University Hospital said Gail Huie was in good condition Wednesday and her husband Mike Huie,  was in critical condition.
