Teen arrested in fire death

Sylacauga police said they have charged A 14-year-old boy in connection with the death of 4-year-old Johna McKenzie Brown and the house fire that claimed her life Friday night. Investigators say that the juvenile, whose name cannot be released due to his age, was taken into custody Saturday and charged with criminally negligent homicide and arson after statements were taken from other residents of the burning home. The teen was a resident of the house, but was not related to the victim. Judge George Sims held an initial hearing for the juvenile on Sunday, Dec. 23, and he is currently being held at a state juvenile detention facility.  Brown was found unconscious in the floor of an upstairs bedroom by the Sylacauga Ambulance Service. She was then transported by an Alabama Lifesaver helicopter to Children’s Hospital in Birmingham, where she passed away a short time later due to smoke inhalation.  Once the fire was extinguished, the state Fire Marshal’s Office and the Talladega County District Attorney’s Office were contacted, and the decision was made to secure the scene until state fire marshal employees and Sylacauga investigators could accurately search for evidence leading to the cause of the fire.

Holiday fatals

While officials reported a safe holiday on roadways in east central Alabama.  Roadway accidents on Christmas Day claimed at least three lives across the state, including a person burned beyond recognition in a Limestone County collision that sent two others to a hospital with injuries.  The body of the victim was sent to a state lab in Huntsville for identification.  In other fatal accidents, a single-vehicle crash on Russell Road south of Citronelle killed Gaines Plez Tryo Rivers, 40. State troopers said Rivers was ejected from his pickup truck, which left the highway and struck several trees just after 4 p.m.
Another Christmas Day wreck, on I-65 near Atmore, killed Cynthia McGill Till, 60, of Repton. Authorities said her vehicle collided with a car just after 2:30 p.m. The driver of the other car was not injured.
In the Limestone County accident, authorities said Kathryn Crowe, 20, of Monterey, Calif., was taken to Huntsville Hospital, where she was listed in serious condition Wednesday. Her passenger, Toshihiro Onitsuka, 22, of Florence, was also injured and listed in fair condition at Huntsville Hospital.

Haralson shooting

A Haralson County Georgia man is recovering today in an Atlanta hospital after being shot when he returned to his Riverside road home to find a suspect armed with his shotgun inside the home.  Deputies from the Haralson County Sheriff's office continue to search for the suspect in the Wednesday afternoon shooting. The victim, Justin Crook, was shot once in the leg and life flighted to an Atlanta Hospital for treatment. Authorities described the suspect as a male wearing a green jacket. If anyone has any additional information on this incident they are encouraged to contact the Haralson countySheriff's Department in Buchanan georgia.

Problems with Wal-Mart Gift Cards

People who received Wal Mart gift cards for Christmas gifts were met with a surprise Wednesday because of a processing glitch.  Wal-Mart says it's having problems processing the gift cards.  Wal-Mart says that once it discovered the problem, it investigated and found that a "third-party verifier's systems had an inadvertent processing error." The retailer said the error caused delays in gift card verifications for customers across the country.  The Arkansas-based company says it's working with the vendor to fix the problem as quickly as possible.
