Teen arrested in fire death
Sylacauga police said they have charged A
14-year-old boy in connection with the death of 4-year-old Johna
McKenzie Brown and the house fire that claimed her life Friday
night. Investigators say that the juvenile, whose name cannot be
released due to his age, was taken into custody Saturday and charged
with criminally negligent homicide and arson after statements were
taken from other residents of the burning home. The teen was a
resident of the house, but was not related to the victim. Judge
George Sims held an initial hearing for the juvenile on Sunday, Dec.
23, and he is currently being held at a state juvenile detention
facility. Brown was found unconscious in the floor of an upstairs
bedroom by the Sylacauga Ambulance Service. She was then transported
by an Alabama Lifesaver helicopter to Children’s Hospital in
Birmingham, where she passed away a short time later due to smoke
inhalation. Once the fire was extinguished, the state Fire
Marshal’s Office and the Talladega County District Attorney’s Office
were contacted, and the decision was made to secure the scene until
state fire marshal employees and Sylacauga investigators could
accurately search for evidence leading to the cause of the fire.
