FBI arrests Piedmont man
Federal Agents have arrested a Piedmont who is
accused of treating to kill two doctors with the U.S. Department of
Veterans Affairs. FBI agents arrested 58 year old Michael Eugene
Cook, based on a complaint filed in federal court Wednesday. In a
press release, the FBI said that agents found evidence indicating
Cook intended to carry out his threats. According to FBI spokesman
Paul Daymond, the physicians in the case worked at the VA office in
Etowah man sentenced to death
An Etowah County man was sentenced to death
Thursday afternoon after having been convicted in October in the
death of a north Gadsden family in 2003. Etowah County Circuit
Judge Allen Millican sentenced Michael Reynolds to death Thursday
afternoon. An Etowah County Jury had unanimously agreed to recommend
the death penalty after his October Conviction. The same jury
convicted Reynolds of capital murder in the stabbing deaths of 38
year old Chuck Martin, his 31 year old wife, Melinda, and
8-year-old daughter, Savanah, at the Martins' home on Tidmore Bend
Road on May 25, 2003.
Mother charged in infants death
Authorities in Dekalb county have charged A
23-year-old Kilpatrick woman with murder in connection with the
death of her 5-week-old son. According to a news release from
DeKalb County Sheriff Jimmy Harris, sheriff's deputies responded to
a 911 call Saturday on County Road 543 - in the Kilpatrick area -
that a child was not breathing. Sgt. Brad Edmondson arrived to find
the father doing CPR on the infant, who was not responsive. The
baby was transported to Marshall Medical Center South and later was
flown to Huntsville Hospital he died Tuesday night.
23 year old Lindsey Nicole Jackson, was arrested by a Special
Investigator with the District Attorney's Office and DHR personnel
around 1 p.m. Thursday and charged with murder. Harris said
Jackson confessed to the death. The infant had suffered head trauma
which prompted the arrest.
Former senator takes job with state
Gadsden area state senator who pleaded guilty to misappropriating
state funds 11 years ago has gone to work for the state Senate.
The Legislature's Contract Review Committee approved a
$50,000-a-year contract yesterday for Bill Drinkard to serve as
assistant to Senate Majority Leader Zeb Little. The contract was
proposed by Senate President Pro Tem Hinton Mitchem, a Union Grove
Democrat. The committee approved Drinkard's contract without the
seeking proposals from others interested in the work. As a
legislator, Drinkard represented the Gadsden area. He served five
years in the Alabama House and seven in the Senate before leaving in
1990 to become a lobbyist. The former legislator was sentenced to
five years of probation for theft for arranging for a state grant to
pay for what prosecutors said was bogus legal work. After pleading
guilty, he paid $15,000 in restitution to the state.
