Federal Agents have arrested a Piedmont who is accused of treating to kill two doctors with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.  FBI agents arrested 58 year old Michael Eugene Cook, based on a complaint filed in federal court Wednesday. In a press release, the FBI said that agents found evidence indicating Cook intended to carry out his threats.  According to FBI spokesman Paul Daymond, the physicians in the case worked at the VA office in Oxford.

Etowah man sentenced to death

An Etowah County man was sentenced to death Thursday afternoon after having been convicted in October in the death of a north Gadsden family in 2003.  Etowah County Circuit Judge Allen Millican sentenced Michael Reynolds to death  Thursday afternoon. An Etowah County Jury had unanimously agreed to recommend the death penalty after his October Conviction.   The same jury convicted Reynolds of capital murder in the stabbing deaths of 38 year old Chuck Martin,  his 31 year old wife, Melinda,  and 8-year-old daughter, Savanah, at the Martins' home on Tidmore Bend Road on May 25, 2003.

Mother charged in infants death

Authorities in Dekalb county have charged A 23-year-old Kilpatrick woman with murder in connection with the death of her 5-week-old son.  According to a news release from DeKalb County Sheriff Jimmy Harris, sheriff's deputies responded to a 911 call Saturday on County Road 543 - in the Kilpatrick area - that a child was not breathing.  Sgt. Brad Edmondson arrived to find the father doing CPR on the infant, who was not responsive.  The baby was transported to Marshall Medical Center South and later was flown to Huntsville Hospital he died Tuesday night.
23 year old Lindsey Nicole Jackson,  was arrested by a Special Investigator with the District Attorney's Office and DHR personnel around 1 p.m. Thursday and charged with murder.   Harris said Jackson confessed to the death.  The infant had suffered head trauma which prompted the arrest.

Former senator takes job with state

A former Gadsden area state senator who pleaded guilty to misappropriating state funds 11 years ago has gone to work for the state Senate.   The Legislature's Contract Review Committee approved a $50,000-a-year contract yesterday for Bill Drinkard to serve as  assistant to Senate Majority Leader Zeb Little. The contract was proposed by Senate President Pro Tem Hinton Mitchem, a Union Grove Democrat.   The committee approved Drinkard's contract without the Senate
seeking proposals from others interested in the work.   As a legislator, Drinkard represented the Gadsden area. He served five years in the Alabama House and seven in the Senate before leaving in 1990 to become a lobbyist.  The former legislator was sentenced to five years of probation for theft for arranging for a state grant to pay for what prosecutors said was bogus legal work. After pleading guilty, he paid $15,000 in restitution to the state.
