Jacksonville names new councilman
The Jacksonville Mayor and City Council Monday
night narrowed their field of 14 candidates for a vacant City
Council position to one naming Truman Norred, pastor of Blue
Mountain Baptist Church in Anniston, to fill the position vacated by
the July resignation of councilman Jeff Shelton. Norred said his
most important issues involves education and public safety. Norred
said he is undecided as to whether he will run for election next
August. Norred will attend his first committee meeting as a
councilman Monday when the cities finance committee will get their
first look at the citys proposed budget.
UAW move at Honda
The United Auto Workers union is attempting to
gain a foothold in Alabama's emerging auto industry sending letters
to workers at Honda's Lincoln plant and plans to hold a meeting this
week for employees interested in organizing. In a letter dated Aug.
3, the UAW says it has received calls, letters and e-mails from
workers at the Talladega County plant since late last year. The
union's letter said it has been "quietly meeting with small groups
of Honda workers" for a few months. Honda's human resources director
responded with a letter dated Friday, saying it is unclear how the
UAW got employee addresses and urging them to "remain focused on our
daily tasks." Spokesman Mark Morrison said Monday the company has
no idea how many of its 4,500 Lincoln employees got letters from the
UAW, but added several complained about it. He said that Honda never
shares employee addresses. The letter from the UAW Solidarity
Committee in Detroit says union officials plan to hold an official
organizing meeting with interested employees Wednesday afternoon at
a Lincoln hotel. The UAW push in Lincoln marks the second time in
less than two years that a union has tried to organize one of
Alabama's auto plants. The International Association of Machinists &
Aerospace Workers in April ended a 12-month campaign in which it had
targeted production workers at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Vance. An
organizer said the Machinists are considering renewing the campaign
in September. The UAW tried to organize the Mercedes plant without
success five years ago.
Jacksonville approves Sr. Center construction
After over a year of work and planning, the
Jacksonville Mayor and council Monday night gave final approval to
plans and specifications for the construction of a new senior center
adjacent to the Jacksonville community center. Mayor Johnny Smith
said that the city is facing a time deadline to get the project
under contract. The council agreed over a year ago to build the new
center after the previous facility was abandoned because of the
rapidly deteriorating condition of the building.
Bingo in Hobson City
Can Bingo save Hobson City. Mayor Ralph
Woods said Monday night that the Calhoun County Bingo Regulatory
Commission will meet Thursday at 6 p.m. in the Calhoun County
Administration building to consider a request for a bingo operation
in the city. Woods asked residents to attend and voice support for
a bingo hall. I-20 bingo at the former Hobson City bingo hall.
When in operation previously, the operation at one time provided 25
percent of the city's revenue, but payments gradually declined and
the hall's owner closed the business and left the town owing taxes.
The new bingo hall under consideration Thursday will push for Class
II bingo or electronic gaming which woods said is a more accurate
way to track money. The proposed bingo hall would first have to be
approved by the counties bingo commission this Thursday.
