Amsouth bank in Saks robbed

Anniston Police were searching Wednesday afternoon for two suspects who robbed an Amsouth Bank in Saks Wednesday morning.  According to officials, two black males entered the bank on Highway 431 near 11 this morning.  Authorities say that no one was injured but would not disclose if any money was taken.

Head of National Guard youth Challenge Academy fired

More than two months after opening its doors to 117 students, the Alabama National Guard's Youth Challenge Academy at McClellan is down to about 32 students and is without its director and assistant director, both of whom have been fired by Adjutant Gen. Mark Bowen. Bowen said he fired director Montaleto Irby and the assistant director, 1st Lt. Danny Crosby, in March. One of the main reasons General Bowen said , was that they were not supporting the efforts of the academy's instructional staff. General Bowen said he hoped to interview a possible replacement for Irby this Thursday. Col. Tony Wingo, a longtime Guard officer is now the academy's acting director. Guard officials say Alabama's effort to set up its academy has had some stumbles, particularly in the recruitment of youths for its first session. A number of students withdrew or were expelled following a fight in the academy cafeteria Jan. 25. Twelve students suffered minor injuries. Enrollment continued to drop in the weeks that followed. Bowen and other Guard officials said they are improving recruiting for the second academy session, which is scheduled to begin July 15. Their goal is to have 125 students.

Oxford couple indicted for child abuse

A Calhoun County Grand Jury has indicted an Oxford couple on two counts of felony child abuse. 43 year old Anthony Riley Sr., and 43 year old Tunja Kelley Riley are accused of beating their two children with an extension cord and punished them by making them kneel on dry rice on a hard floor for long periods of time. The couple has been released on bond .

Three arrested in shooting of newspaper carrier

Talladega County Sheriff’s deputies have arrested three teens in connection with the March 28th shooting and carjacking of a newspaper carrier  near Childersburg. 19 year old Willie Lee Ricks,  and 18 year old Alexander Lamon Ricks, both of Childersburg, and 17 year old Roderick Darius Bolton, of  Alpine, had initial court appearances Tuesday morning before District Judge George Sims. All three were charged with one count each of attempted murder and robbery in the first degree. Judge Sims set total bonds of $500,000 for each of the defendants. The three teens are accused of dragging a log across Grist Mill Road and then waiting for the first car to come by. Christie Haywood, a subcontractor delivering newspapers, hit the log with her car When she stopped, she was shot in the face, arm and side with a 20-gauge shotgun.  Investigators said that the victim overheard one of her attackers saying, “Willie, let’s go,” which led investigators to the Ricks brothers. Officers say all three participants confessed after being questioned about the case. In addition to the state charges, the suspects could also face carjacking charges, which is a federal crime.
