Calhoun investigators seeking help in Tuesday robbery 

Investigators with the Calhoun County Sheriffs department are seeking the publics help in their investigation to a Tuesday robbery in the White Plains area.  According to investigators,  a black male, wearing black jeans, black t shirt and a bandana across his face entered Steward’s Market on highway 9 near 11 Tuesday morning and armed with a black pistol took a quantity of cash.  Witness saw a late ninetys or early 2000 crème colored Chrysler passenger car, with possible body damage to the rear, leaving the rear of the store at a high rate of speed.  Investigators are hoping that someone in the area of Seward’s Market or the Wagon Wheel Restaurant at the time of the robbery may have seen the suspect.  If you were in the area between 10am and 11:30 Tuesday morning and saw a black male loitering in the area or any suspicious behavior or vehicle, you are asked to contact the Calhoun County Sheriffs Department at 236-6600.


Anniston Middle School students face charges 

Anniston police say that Two Anniston Middle School students were arrested Thursday after separate incidents Thursday that included minor injuries to the school’s principal and a teacher’s aide, and at least 10 broken windows at the school.. Principal Lynwood Hawkins and teacher’s aide Rin Smithson reportedly received scrapes and bruises when  a 15-year-old being disciplined in the principals  ran out of the office, broke the glass over a fire extinguisher, and kicked open the fire-escape door before running into a classroom, where he threw a desk through a window. The student was finally restrained by Hawkins and other faculty members.The second incident occurred later in the day., when a 14-year-old student began throwing rocks through windows from inside the building Police say that both students have been charged with criminal mischief. The first student also was charged with two counts of assault on school personnel.  



Oxford budget set for approval 

Oxford officials anticipate a $6 million increase in city revenues during 2007, from this year’s $26 million to $32 million. The Oxford Mayor and  City Council held a called meeting Thursday night to review the city’s proposed annual budget. The cities finance director estimates the city will take in $5.6 million in added tax revenues from new retail stores in the city as well as a large increase in interest collected on the city’s government bonds and CD accounts. The proposed budget projects $31.2 million in spending for 2007,  including significant pay raises for all city employees and a $1.6 million increase in funding for the Oxford city schools. The council will vote on the proposed budget at its regular meeting Tuesday night.
