Red Diamond moving to Moody

Red Diamond officials reached a deal Monday to move the company's headquarters and all five of its operating divisions to Moody in St. Clair County, ending its century-long base in Birmingham and Jefferson County. Red Diamond is investing $20 million to build a new corporate campus on 59 acres off St. Clair County 10 in Moody. The expanded operations will add 40 to 60 jobs. Red Diamond President Bill Bowron said he hopes to have the facilities built and all of the company's 160-plus employees moved within two years.  Plans call for a three-building corporate campus that will have a two-story headquarters building, a coffee and tea plant and a food services distribution center.  Red Diamond has five operating divisions. Its coffee and tea division sells products in 37 states and is adding more. Its coffee services operation provides coffee to numerous hotels and restaurants in the Southeast. It also has a private-label food services division, a private-label retail division and a food services distribution operation that ships more than 6,000 items. Bowron said Red Diamond, which is privately held, does not disclose sales figures, but said some operations have seen growth of more than 50 percent recently.

Petitions seeking alcohol vote in Randolph County

Petitions are being circulated in Randolph County to call for a referendum on the November general election ballot to approve alcohol sales in the county.  Orgainizers say that they are seeking 2,600 signatures of registered voters in the county by September 6th to get the issue on the ballott.  If approved, it would allow the sale of beer and wine in the county which has never allowed alcohol sales.  Organizers say that petitions are available at most convenience stores in Randolph County.  Again the deadline to obtain the signatures is Wednesday.

Work progressing on regional airport

Officials say they hope to have the new Centre Piedmont Cherokee county regional airport open next month.  Paving of the 4,200 foot runway has been completed and the airport authority has been approved for a grant from the FAA to extend the runway to 5,500 feet.  Federal money is paying for 95% of the airport construction with 2.5% coming from the state and the remaining 2.5% coming from the local governments participating in the project.  The new airport is located on 308 acres between Piedmont and Centre off Alabama Highway 9.  Officials project between two and three thousand takeoffs and landings at the near airport each year.

Gadsden and Etowah County officials to meet on jail costs

Members of the Gadsden City Council will meet tomorrow with members of the Etowah County Commission to discuss rising costs for housing city inmates.  The city council received notice from the county last week that they face significant increases in costs for housing their inmates.  County officials said that the increases are a result of their increased costs in operating the county detention facility.  City officials are also looking at other alternatives.  The city closed it’s city jail after the construction of the new county detention facility finding it less expensive to contract with the county to house inmates.  The officials will meet Wednesday afternoon at 2 in the conference room at the Etowah county courthouse in Gadsden.
