Accident kills Wellington man

A Wednesday afternoon accident on highway 431 north of Anniston claimed the life of an elderly Wellington man and sent an Anniston man to the hospital.  According to troopers, the accident occurred just after noon Wednesday in front of the Sonic on hiway 431 some six miles north of Anniston. Troopers said that 85 year old Douglas G. Callahan, of Wellington died after his 1997 Dodge Caravan  collided with a 1993 Cadillac DeVille driven by 66 year old Marvin Oliphant Jr. of Anniston. Oliphant was transported to Northeast Alabama Regional Medical Center.  Troopers said that the cause of the accident is still under investigation

Jacksonville to regulate non running vehicles

The Jacksonville City Council is expected to approve final passage of an ordinance to regulate abandoned or non running vehicles in the city.   Under the proposed ordinance, owners would not be able to leave non operational vehicles out for more than 60 days. Fines would range from $100 to $500. Vehicles left on public property would have to be removed within 72 hours.  If the ordinance passes, officials speculate that as many as 1,000 people in the city could be subject to citation.   The proposed ordinance allows work to continue for businesses or people with vehicle-restoration permits.  Another exception allows for a privacy-type structure or fence that blocks the public’s view of such vehicles.   The city council is scheduled to consider the ordinance when they meet Monday night at 7pm

Bond set for murder suspect on firearms charge

Jimmy Curtis Bundrum was back in court Wednesday for a bond hearing on firearms charges.  Bundrum had been free on a $150,000 bond after his arrest in the September 25th shooting death of his neighbor, Kevin Samuel Finch.  Bundrum was arrested over the weekend after authorities determined that a gun seized during a search of his residence on the day of the shooting was an illegal sawed off shotgun, prompting his re-arrest over the weekend.  Officials were concerned about Bundrum being released as he lives directly across the road from the victims widow and children.  According to Sheriff Larry Amerson,  Bond was set at $75,000 with stipulations that Bundrum cannot return to the area of the shooting.   Authorities say that Bundrum claims the shooting was a result of an argument involving a dog.
