Developers express interest in Jacksonville Property

Jacksonville city officials say they have been approached by developers interested in 50 acres of land that the city owns west of James Hopkins Road.  The city owns a 70 acre tract of land on the road and according to Mayor Johnny Smith, if the city decides to sell some of the property, they will keep 20 acres for possible future school construction.  The mayor would not divulge the name of those interested in the property.  The council is also considering selling 20 acres behind the walmart supercenter which is part of the former Henry farm

Cleburne Grand Jury fails to indict on missing funds

A Cleburne County Grand Jury failed to return an indictment in a case of money missing from the City of Heflin.  Heflin Mayor Anna Berry issued a written statement Friday saying that the District attorney told the mayor it is very difficult to prove the chain of events when cash is involved and for that reason,  the grand jury was unable to return an indictment.   Berry said that the city was disappointed not to be able to get resolution on the matter.  The money in question came up missing during the previous administration and was funds making their route from the Heflin Recreation Center to the bank thru Heflin City Hall.

ADEM Fines Pell City

The Alabama Department of Environmental Management, or ADEM, has made a preliminary determination that Pell City’s violation of their wastewater treatment permit warrants enforcement action and a civil penalty.  Under a proposed consent order the city has 945 days to implement corrective actions to prevent raw sewage from being discharged into public waters.  The city must also pay the state $19,500 in civil penalties after ADEM officials observed a major sewer overflow from the city’s sewer system on Feb 6th.  The overflow led to discharge of several hundred gallons of untreated sewage into Blue Springs and ultimately into Logan Martin Lake for an extended period of time.  City officials have requested an informal meeting with ADEM.  City officials had anticipated the action and have been working to gain funds to make the necessary improvements to the cities sewage treatment facilities.

Gas prices fall slightly

There is some good news regarding skyrocketing gasoline prices across Alabama. According to Triple-A Alabama, pump prices declined slightly overnight. Today's Daily Fuel Gauge Report shows regular unleaded dipped three-tenths of a penny to two dollars, 85 cents a gallon. Mid grade fuels hover at three dollars, four cents a gallon. Premium is three-13 and diesel, on average, is two-84 a gallon. The price for regular is 35 cents higher than a month ago and 69 cents more from a year ago. Triple-A's metro survey finds motorists in Huntsville pay the highest prices for regular, on average, at two-88 a gallon. The cheapest prices can be found in Birmingham at two-83 a gallon. The national average for regular is two dollars, 92 cents a gallon.
