Man injured in 4 wheeler accident

An Ohatchee man was airlifted to University hospital in Birmingham Sunday evening after being seriously injured in a four wheeler accident.  According to authorities,  32 year old Chad Clements along with five or six others were riding four-wheelers on a mountainside dirt road near New Haven Baptist Church when Clements hit some rocks causing the four-wheeler to roll down the mountainside and on top of him twice.  Officials say that Clements sustained multiple broken ribs and a punctured lung.

Two live hand grenades were recovered late Sunday from a vacant residence on Third Avenue in Piedmont.  According to police, two people were cleaning the vacant house late Sunday when the found the two grenades in a closet and called Piedmont police.  Officials say that both grenades were intact and in their original packaging.  The Anniston Army Depot’s Explosive Ordinance Disposal unit removed the world war two era grenades taking them to the Anniston Depot where they will be destroyed.

Etowah County officials push for new bridge on hwy 77

City officials from Southside and Rainbow City as well as local legislators met Friday to begin what they hope is the first step toward seeking funding for a new northbound bridge across the Coosa River at Southside on Alabama highway 77.  The leaders met with congressman Robert Aderhold stressing to the congressman the need to replace the northbound bridge built in the 1930’s.  Officials are hoping since the congressman was able to get over 14 million dollars in funding in 1998 for bridge projects on I-759 that he could help with the Southside project.  Aderholt told the group that the best source of funding would likely be in a highway spending authorization bill which was passed last summer and will not have to be reauthorized for four years.  Another possibility according to the congressman would be an annual appropriation bill, but because a large amount of money would be needed the congressman said that would be very hard to do.  The congressman urged the group to get the state department of transportation involved and on board with a cost and traffic study.  Officials said they would set up a meeting with the DOT as soon as possible.  The northbound bridge on Alabama 77 is very narrow and can only support one lane of traffic compared to the southbound bridge which handles two lanes of traffic.
