Officials in Cherokee County and the Piedmont area are hoping that a new airport set to open in about sixty days will be an asset to attract industry to the area.  Officials say the 4,400 foot runway has been completed and the runway will be striped in a few days.  James Beall, chairman of the Centre-Piedmont – Cherokee County Regional Airport Authority,  they hope to build an industrial park near the new 8 million dollar airport, in addition to leasing hangers and land to businesses that need to store aircraft as well as providing fuel and maintenance services to pilots. Beall said that an out of state flight training school has already expressed an interest in building a satellite training center at the new airport.  The FAA in Marck allocated over 673 thousand dollars to extend the runway an additional 1,300 feet extending the runway to 5,500 feet, making it capable of handling planes carrying up to 15 passengers.   The new airport is in the middle of a 2,900 acre cotton field on Alabama highway 9 between Centre and Piedmont.
