Anniston may hire attorney to monitor PCB cleanup

Voicing concern over whether the PCB cleanup operations in Anniston are being followed in accordance with a federal court consent decree, the Anniston mayor and council is considering hiring an environmental attorney to make sure that the requirements of the 2003 court decree are being followed.  According to Mayor Chip Howell, a proposal will be brought back before the council.  Some residents, along with some council members have expressed distrust in the handling and dumping of PCB contaminated materials off Monsanto Road.   Some council members said they were concerned that the new Monsanto site is not specifically addressed in the consent degree and the council wants an environmental attorney to investigate the issue.

Local support undecided on McClellan Bio Tech Lab

While Governor Bob Riley said Monday in Jacksonville that he will push for the construction of a major federal Bio Tech Lab at McClellan,  local support for the project is still up in the air.  Anniston Mayor Chip Howell, who is also a member of the McClellan Joint Powers Authority, said that a decision has not been made for or against the plan, but McClellan was placed in the running for the Major facility.  Howell said that there is a lot of support for the project, but that more information and education is needed on the proposed project. McClellan was placed in the running for the facility at the request of the Calhoun County Chamber of Commerce.

Oxford convenience store robbed / Meth lab uncovered in scrap yard

Oxford police are searching for a couple who robbed an Oxford convenience store early Tuesday morning.  Police said that a man, armed with a handgun entered the Pak a Sak on highway 78 near 5 Tuesday morning and fled with an undetermined amount of money in a small silver car driven by a woman.
Oxford Police arrested two men and are seeking a third man on drug charges.  Police arrested the men after they discovered a meth lab and two stolen vehicles in a scrap yard just outside the city.  50 year old Ricky Talmon Cofield and 56 year old Ronald Dean Barber are both charged with manufacturing controlled substances.  Police are searching for Barber’s son, Christopher Scott Barber who fled from officers who believe he may be hiding in Henry County Georgia.

Downtown Anniston businesses raise concern over ABC store location

While city and community leaders in Anniston have voiced opposition to the location of and ABC store in the downtown area, a legal challenge may be in the works.  The ABC Board abandoned their plan to locate in the downtown location after public outcry against the plan from both the public and city leaders.  The ABC board stated that they did not want to be somewhere where they were not wanted.  The problem is that the Property owner who was leasing the property to the ABC board is pushing for the proposal for the location to be followed thru.  Anniston City Manager George Monk said that they hope to have the issue resolved soon.  Businesses adjacent to the proposed location expressed concern to the Anniston mayor and council Tuesday night that work was continuing on the proposed site.
