Oxford robbery suspect shot

A man suspected of attempting to rob a home in Oxford Monday afternoon was transported to Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries after being shot by the father in law of the homeowner on Craft Road.  Oxford police said that another suspect who fled the scene is in police custody. Police said the two men earlier had robbed the house and were confronted by the shooter, who was checking on the property.   Officials said charges for theft are pending for both suspects.  A grand jury is likely to decide whether the shooting was legal.

Calhoun Democrats to select candidate for county school board

Calhoun counties democratic executive committee is scheduled to meet next Thursday to select a candidate for an open seat on the Calhoun county board of education.  Former school board member Guy Howell died on June 5th from complications of lung surgery.  A three person panel has been chosen to select a candidate to appear on the November general election ballot.   Four other democrats are seeking the seven seats on the board this fall running against seven republicans.

German company breaks ground in Pell City

Another German company is moving operations to the city and is officially breaking ground on its new facility today.   The St. Clair County Economic Development Council announced Monday Verscheiss Schutz Technik, VST Keller Inc., a family owned company based in Shopfheim, Germany, was opening its first North American headquarters in Pell City.   VST Keller Inc. treats various stamping dies used in the automotive industries, making those dyes five times harder than hardened steel.   George Keller, president of the VST Keller Inc. American Corporation, said after 25 years of operations, the company felt it was strong enough to go overseas.   Keller said Tennessee and Alabama were in the running for their new North American headquarters.   Keller said the location of automobile industries scattered throughout the Southeast in Alabama, Tennessee and Georgia weighed in their decision to open a plant in Pell City.   Initially, the company will employ about 15 employees, but should have about 30 employees within three years at the Pell City plant.

Avondale Mills closing draws near

A company spokesman for Avondale Mills said Monday that there remains the possibility of the sale of Avondale facilities after the company’s plants end operation next Tuesday.   Steven Felker would not divulge the potential buyer for Avondale Mills trucking division, which could save nearly 100 jobs. Felker said June 28 the company had a potential buyer for the division, which includes 70 to 75 trucks, along with a dispatch and repair center. The division is located behind the Catherine and Eva Jane plants in Sylacauga.  He did confirm the sale of the company’s Alexander City and Rockford plants and a plant in South Carolina to Parkdale Mills has been completed. The sale went through June 30.   Parkdale is a 90-year-old North Carolina textile company. It is headquartered in Gastonia, N.C.  The purchase of these facilities by Parkdale saved some 400 jobs in nearby counties.   Felker said as the July 25 closing date nears, plants are winding down, with less and less work available. Felker said employees will not all lose their jobs at once.   On finding a buyer before the Pell City and Sylacauga plants close, Felker said he doesn’t believe that is going to happen.   Once the company closes its doors after 160-year history in the Southeast, Felker said a plan will be developed to market the company’s facilities.
