Gambling raid nets 4 arrests

Harry Michael Lewis Betty Terrell Donald Terrell Daniel Patrick Smith

Calhoun County Sheriff Larry Amerson reports today that deputies raided an Anniston business Friday arresting four people on gambling charges.  According to the sheriff, deputies executed a search warrant for the Anniston Cue Club on Highway 202 for illegal gambling as the result of an ongoing investigation.  According to the sheriff,  the investigation revealed evidence that the club was taking a percentage of winnings from players making the card games illegal.  Deputies seized some 20 thousand dollars in cash, gambling paraphernalia and records from the business that clearly showed it was an ongoing illegal gambling operation.  Deputies arrested 46 year old Harry Michael Lewis of Eastaboga, 57 year old Betty Terrell, 47 year old Donald Terrell, and 24 year old Daniel Patrick Smith, all of Anniston, charging them with promoting gambling.

Couple arrested in Saturday robbery in Alexandria

Calhoun County Sheriffs deputies have arrested a Calhoun county couple in connection with the Saturday robbery of a woman leaving an Alexandria grocery store.  According to reports, the theft occurred near 7 Saturday night from a woman exiting the Foodland Grocery store on highways 144 and 431 in Alexandria.  A white male approached the woman and used force to take her purse.  The man, being chased by the victim ran into a wooded area.  Deputies in the area responded within minutes and a witness identified the robber.  Sunday deputies arrested 27 year old James Anthony Smith of Anniston.
Another witness observed the vehicle from which smith exited prior to the robbery and  got the tag number. Deputies arrested the driver 28 year old Misty Ann Haywood of the same Anniston address.
Smith has been charged with robbery second degree while Haywood has been charged with Theft of Property first degree.  Officers recovered the victims purse with all the contents except for the cash.

Anniston woman killed in house fire

Anniston assistant fire chief David Collins spoke to reporters early Sunday morning after his department was called to a home at 317 H Street in Anniston.  Collins said that the home was consumed in heavy flames when his units arrived at the home near 6:20 Sunday morning.  According to Calhoun County Coroner Bill Partridge, the owner of the home Lizolia Swain died from smoke inhalation and thermal burns.  Her daughter was taken to the hospital but her name and condition have not been released by authorities.  Collins would not comment on the cause of the fire, saying it was under investigation by the Alabama Fire Marshals office, which is standard procedure anytime someone is killed in a fire.

TV Show helps in capture of fugitive sex offender

Glencoe police say they had enlisted the help of a U.S. Marshals fugitive task force based in Birmingham to search for a fugitive sex offender after learning about it from a representative of the television program "America's Most Wanted."
Glencoe police chief Robert Griffith said that  detective Alex Hudson came up with the idea to contact `America's Most Wanted.  He e-mailed the show about posting information about  fugitive sex offender 49-year-old Danny Lewis Smith, also known as Dan Rivers on its Web site. A representative then called the department about producing a piece on Smith for the on-air show.  That's when Griffith was told about the U.S. Marshals Service providing assistance to other law enforcement agencies involved in fugitive investigations.  Griffith called the number he was given and requested some help. The next day a meeting took place between local officers and task force members.  Griffith said he and Etowah County Sheriff's Department investigator Jeff Hopper shared with the task force information in their case file. The six members of the task force arrested Smith about 1 a.m. Thursday.  Griffith said he was told a cameraman for "America's Most Wanted" was with the task force when Smith was taken into custody while sleeping inside a van in Jackson County.
