Piedmont accident kills 1 injures 3

A 22 year old Bristol Tennessee woman was killed and three others were injured Tuesday evening in a one car accident on hiway 278 some 5 miles west of piedmont.  Alicia Nicole Brogdon was the driver of the 1993 Nissan Pathfinder and was killed in the accident.  19 year old Natalie Smith and 4 year old Chase Brogdon both of piedmont were taken to Gadsden regional hospital.  Another passenger, 3 year old Steven Brogdon of Bristol Tennessee was airlifted to UAB hospital in Birmingham.  Troopers said the accident occurred near 7:20 Tuesday evening.

Gadsden approves official language ordinance

English is now the official language of the city of Gadsden.  The Gadsden City Council Tuesday approved a resolution designating English as the official language of the city, and Mayor Steve Means said other measures aimed at illegal immigrants would be considered later.  In the pre-council meeting, City Attorney Roger Kirby said the resolution doesn't prohibit people from speaking Spanish nor require that every communication be conducted in English.  He said the city is saying official documents of the city are to be in English but it does not prohibit anyone from communicating in another language.  Means said the resolution and three other companion measures that the council will consider next week are what he calls "ground rules for immigrating to Gadsden."  He said it was not "mean spirited" and was "open armed" but was clear. Some of the language was already in state and federal law, Means said, but he wanted it in the city code so there would be no misunderstanding.  The resolution included statistics about the importance of speaking English in the United States.  The council will consider next week an ordinance regulating "day laborer businesses," an ordinance setting minimum space requirement for residences and requiring owners and agents to verify that people living there are in the United States legally.  There is also a resolution that allows city police officers to get training from Immigration and Custom Enforcement.

Man charged in shooting painter

A 61-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder after allegedly shooting a man who did some painting at his home and went to collect $30 still owed to him, according to Etowah County Sheriff James Hayes.  Larry Gravlee was arrested at his residence on Pineview Circle, off Steele Station Road, after the shooting Monday afternoon.  32 year old Steven Elmore, had done some painting for Gravlee and went by to collect the money.  When Gravlee refused to pay, telling Elmore he did not finish the job. Gravlee allegedly told Elmore he would die and pulled a .22 revolver. Gravlee then fired a shot through the front passenger window of Elmore's car.  Elmore was getting in the car and was struck in the right forearm. As Elmore drove away, Gravlee allegedly fired another shot that went through the back door window on the driver's side, breaking the glass. In addition to the attempted murder charge  Gravlee also was charged with shooting into an occupied vehicle. A $5,000 bond was set for each charge.

Removal of scrap tires begins in Attalla

Removal of scrap tires from Alabama's largest tire dump began Tuesday in Attalla at what remains of an abandoned recycling business where at least 8 million tires are stored.  The first tractor-trailer loaded with tires Tuesday was bound for a recycler in Mississippi under a $7.1 million contract to remove the millions of tires and tire parts from the former Four Star Wholesale and Tire Brokerage site that is on First Street, within two blocks of downtown.  The contract with C.W. Owens Enterprises of Southside and Ohatchee was the first awarded by the Alabama Department of Environmental Management under the 2003 Alabama Scrap Tire Environmental Quality Act.
