ABC Store for Wilmer & 13th in Anniston scrapped

Plans to locate an ABC Package store on the corner of Wilmer avenue and 13th street in downtown Anniston has been scrapped,  That word comes from Anniston Mayor Chip Howell  who said that the ABC board has scrapped the location because of strong public opposition from the downtown business community as well as the city council.

Accident claims life of Steele Woman

A 48 year old Steele woman was killed and two passengers in her car injured Wednesday evening in a one vehicle accident on interstate 59 3 miles south of Attalla.  According to Troopers at the Jacksonville post, Sharon Ann Hyatt Green was driving a 1987 Mercury cougar and was killed in the accident.  Two passengers in her vehicle, 29 year old Eugeana Marie Patterson and 1 year old Savanna Deal were injured.  All three of the occupants were from Steele.  Other details on the accident were not available from troopers.

Sweepstakes operators expected to pop up in Calhoun County

With this weeks action by the Oxford and Anniston City Councils to regulate sweepstakes gaming operations in their cities,  Calhoun County Sheriff Larry Amerson expects operations to begin popping up in the county, where business licenses and machine licenses are not required .  The city of Oxford has placed a moratorium on the issuance of business licenses for sweepstakes gaming businesses while the city of Anniston has placed a five thousand dollar licensing fee per machine plus 10% of all of the machines proceeds.

Calhoun County applies for Community Development Block Grant

Calhoun County Commissioners Thursday gave the go-ahead to seek a community development block grant for a project to clean up the west end area of Calhoun county.   During a public hearing on the grant, Anniston Mayor Chip Howell supported the grant, pointing out that the closing of Ft. McClellan caused a significant drop in the cities population which left some two thousand homes that have now become substandard.  County officials say the grant will be used to either clean up blighted areas in the west end area.  Calhoun County will be competing with other counties across the state for the grant money which was a program faced with major cuts from the Bush Administration.
