Body found in Cleburne County well

Cleburne County Sheriffs deputies recovered the body of a Hispanic man who had apparently been at the bottom of an abandoned well since January.  Sheriff Joe Jacks said they received a tip about the body which was in the well south of Heflin on County road 77.  Jacks said that the Hispanic man had been shot to death.  Deputies have arrested a man and woman in what they believe was a robbery.  Authorities would not release the names of the suspects indicating that it might hinder their investigation.  Jacks said that deputies are still working to try to identify the victim.  The body was recovered Thursday afternoon after over six hours of excavating at the hand dug well.  Coroner Rudy Rooks said he was unable to determine much from the body because of decomposition, the body has been sent to the state forensic lab in Huntsville for an autopsy.  Rooks said the victim was last seen alive on the night of Jan. 28th at AJ’s Bar in Anniston, and that he may have been a resident of Calhoun County.

ADEM cites Anniston Chemical Agent Disposal Facility

The Anniston Chemical Agent Disposal Facility has been cited by the state Department of Environment Management for 19 violations of the facilities state work permit.  Officials say the violations, which occurred last fall were not major and did not expose workers or the public to danger.  Included in the violations were failures to clean up spills of hydraulic fluid in the Munitions Demilitarization Building,  the storing of secondary waste in the building beyond the 72 hour limit as well as violations of standard operating procedures in the labs and violations of parameters in certain equipment.  Officials at the Anniston Disposal Facility say that procedures have been changed to address the issues and state officials admit that most of the issues have already been resolved.    The Anniston Chemical Agent Disposal Facility is currently tooling up to begin processing VX filled munitions.

Sheriff warns of internet scam

Calhoun county Sheriff Larry Amerson has issued a warning about an online internet scam after a Calhoun County woman received counterfeit documents.  The woman had visited a web site seeking people to work at home.  A few days later she received a package containing the work at home information along with a number of Travelers Checks.  A letter advised her to cash the checks, keep some of the money and return the remainder of the money to them.  Suspicious of the checks, the woman contacted the Sheriffs Department who in turn contacted the Secret Service who determined that the checks were counterfeit.  The sheriff said the woman was lucky she contacted authorities instead of attempting to cash the checks which would have resulted in her arrest.   Sheriff Amerson warns that you should never give personal information on the internet without first checking out the company.  In this case the company was in Nigeria which the Sheriff said is a haven for internet scam operations.  Related feature news article...

Officials await ruling on gambling law

With rising concerns from many that gambling establishments like the one which opened late last month in Oxford may begin to pop up across the state,  Law enforcement officials are awaiting  the results of an appeal to the state supreme court on a ruling by a Birmingham judge that the sweepstakes parlors are legal.  Calhoun county Sheriff Larry Amerson says his office is ready to move once there is a clear definition of the law.  There has been no indication when the case will go before the state’s high court.
